hello my wife and I have been wanting to spend sometime in new england when trees and foilage are turning. FInally retired this past spring and now able to devote the 2-3 weeks to this venture. I was wondering what areas, towns etc would be best for this adventure. Leaving sept 23 and returning Oct 15. I realise that weather etc have a major bearing on color but what advice can you offer? tom

Well being from New England the colors don't start till the 15th of October. I would highly recommend Route 100 in Vermont and then head towards Mount Washington. We're gonna hit this route this fall.

I'd say in late October is the best. Pretty up there. Kentucky also has some beautiful fall colors.
4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

This is sort of a useful tool.
As you can see, some areas may start a bit earlier than mentioned above.

Mt Washington area, Kancamangus highway and then to Freyburg Maine for the last fair of the year......You will not regret it and they have a CG on site at the Freyburg fairgrounds.

Hi, We spent many falls in the mount wash area and Like said the fryberg fair is a blast. Campgrounds (most) close columbus day weekend. North Conway is our favorite area and the kanga area has state parks along the route. Bartlett area is also busy w/attractions. New hampshire/Maine border is a nice area for color. Paul

What a great thread. I've been wanting to see all those colors too. It's been three years since I retired and we still haven't made it there yet. What's up with that? You folks are giving good answers and I'm going to jot those down. But, I think there's a conflicting problem with going back there, at that time. We've been lead to believe that a very large percentage of the campgrounds/RV parks are closed up, starting around 10/1. Is that not true. If there's some still open, and that part of the country is still not being melted down by heat waves, I'm game!
Thanks for a great thread.

We found that most RV parks stay open till after the season is over and that normally coincides with the end of the Fryeburg fair. We stay at Green Meadows CG for the week before the fair and travel to all the good leaf viewing sites from there. Then for the fair, we move over to the fairgrounds for the week. This covers all the fun and areas that we feel are must see and must do.

Finding open campgrounds on the way back is real fun. Think KOA, I really do not go there. But I did in Indianan. A nice place.
