my brake away cable drags on the ground and the wire split on last trip. How long should it be? and can one buy a new one with the protective plastic coating on it?

Several choices

Yes, you can replace the cable with a coated one. Mine is too long also, I just tie a loose knot in it to take up the slack.

Better too long than too short. Last thing you want is your TT wheels locking up. I weave mine through the safety chain a few times until it is slack but no where near dragging.

Your going to get a lot of different ideas and opinions on this.

IMHO it should be just long enough to make your turns without pulling the pin in the tightest turn you can make but shorter than your safety chains. That is the way mine came from the factory and I agree with that.

You can buy plastic coated cable from any good hardware store and make up your own.

I have weaved my through my safety chain that attaches on the left side of my tv. I put a d ring on the end...and have U type clevis attached to my lower bumper area. I just have to pull a pin, insert the d ring, put pin back in and I am ready to go.

I always try to keep it shorter than the break away chains. Support it by running it through a padlock hooked to the hole in the ball latch. I hook mine to the bumper of the truck that isnt the hitch rechiever. If the trailer ever does seperate from the truck I want the break away switch to be pulled before the chains go tight.

Bungie cord to hold up the slack works great.

I have the exact unit from a different source on my carhauler. It is an absolute must have. Never a problem now.
