When the vehicle is running for the first few minutes the rpm will jump from 500 to 900 over and over. My code scanner says there are no codes. The check engine light has not come on. It has been doing this for a few months and I have been waiting for a code so I can repair the situation.

What might be causing this idle issue?

Thanks.

Does your truck have the "high idle" option? My duramax does, and if it's cold enough it will come on to warm the truck up faster. The truck knows how cold it is outside though, and even if you have it turned on, it still has to be cold enough outside to activate the switch. I don't know what the exact temperature is, but seems like it's maybe around 35 degrees. Just an idea.

Could be a MAF sensor or the idle air control valve. Also check the EGR. Any of these 3 or a combo of any could do what you are describing.

I wolud look at the idle air motor and EGR also. Had a Stratus that did the same thing. Would clean the AIM about every four months until I replaced it and the EGR.

Not sure on the GM's, but a reset of the ECU might fix things up? You should just have to disconnect the battery for about 15-20 minutes and that should do it. Restart the truck and don't touch the gas pedal. Let the computer find it's idle speed on it's own.

Downside is you will lose your radio pre sets and if you are close to getting an emissions test, you'll have to drive around a bit to get the ECU set so it clears it's initialization codes.

Good luck

Mitch

No emissions test to worry about in Mich that I know of. If you remove the AIM and clean it carefully check the tapered portion for a grove. If it has one replace the unit.

My 2012 does this as well. Its the high idle bringing the engine up to temp from a cold start. I have been told this by the dealer and a well known independant diesel shop. I feel good about it.
