Here's what we use:

Screw it to the end of the hose, slide it about 3/4 of the way in your filler hose and turn on the valve. It has a handy on/off valve on it, too.
We fill for a couple of minutes and turn it off and pull it out to let the vent catch up, then start filling again. The vent isn't quite as large and we can fill our ~35gal tank in about 3-5 mins this way.
It is *MUCH* easier with this tool! I've done it without and it is a mess
Be sure to run some water on the ground from the hydrant before attaching your hose to avoid any dirt or crud in your hose. I then do the same with the hose and all attached, just to be sure.
Another tip: After draining and removing your fresh water hose (WHITE), I coil it up and connect the two ends together to keep any spiders, dirt, bugs, etc out of our drinking water hoses and wrap a piece of double-sided velcro around the hose before hanging it up in the camper's garage.
BTW, I didn't buy it from the link above, it was just the first one Google found with the pic.
Oh yeah, when is it full? You can hear it filling to the top, and when you take out the filler hose, it may push water back out for a second or two. As long as you don't pressurize the tank with air or water by not allowing it to exhaust air while filling, you'll be fine.
*BUT* if you make an air-tight/water-tight connection to the fill opening, you can end up damaging your tank. They aren't made for pressure.
Also- make sure you are using the fill opening, NOT the fresh water connection opening. The first fills your tank, the second is designed for pressure and connects directly into your lines, not the tank.
I'm sure you knew this, but maybe someone else will be reading this down the road who doesn't
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the advice. I took off the screws and board to see what is under the dinette bench. The fresh water tank is there, the hook up looks fine, the vent hose looks fine. Not sure what the problem is. Nothing is kinked. The dealership can not look at it for a couple of weeks (after we get back from camping). Tonight I slowely filled the fresh water tank, looking inside to see when full. I will do that next week and haul water from home. (more weight - ugh!) At least a now will know I have water in the tank when I leave the house.

Similiar to DiskDr, I use a short 10" lenth of hose with a female end on it that I can screw onto the house hose's male end. I stick the short end down the filler and turn on the spigot.

you might try using that fill spout that diskdoctr recommended, but add a much longer length of clear plastic tubing to it, that will actually reach into your fresh water tank... That's what I do with my rig and I can fill up a 46 gallon tank in no time at all...

Discdoctr, I went and bought one of those just like yours today. It works great. There is enough room besides that hose for more air to escape and the tank filled up just fine.
THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL THE ADVICE. :-)

Mind if I ask where you got it?

I paid about $7, but at least get free shipping. Easier for me than searching local rv places. Mine is about 30 miles away.

Excellent! Glad you found a solution.
I've been at a campground for a few days and just today hooked up high speed internet for the campground (well, 1/3 of it so far...), so I'm a bit late responding.
We're doing some volunteer work here and get hands-on with a lot of different models.
