This is the display as it suddenly appeared on my laptop this morning. I was hoping to wait for Windows 8 to replace it but this looks bad.

That sure looks like a cracked screen, so I think the computer will make a good paper weight.
You could try using an external monitor and see if that works to confirm it.

oh yeah.. you've cracked the screen..it's not worth while replacing in my experience. two choices.. garbage or you hook it to an external monitor and use it like a desktop pc.

Actually I had been using it, stopped and let it go to sleep, went back to wake it and this is what I got. Nobody even touched it while it was asleep. We are camping at the present time so I don't have another monitor handy. I may try to look at a Goodwill store are pawn shop for a monitor. Goodwill is where my old LCD's reside.Maybe I can buy one back. Just hate to get a new laptop now with the new operating system on the horizon.

I don't think it's a cracked screen. Before junking it you might check the ribbon connector between the motherboard and the LCD. It might just be loose or it needs to be replaced which on mine wasn't that hard to replace it.

CaptPicky is totally right. Try to wiggle the edge of the laptop where the lid/screen is attached to the bottom/keyboard part. If you are handy, just open the bottom of the laptop and check the ribbon cable that goes from the video controller to the screen.
Another possibility is to use the TV as an external screen to the laptop.
Good luck

A silly question, Have you done a complete shutdown and restart and got the same thing?? The reason I ask is sometimes when mine goes into sleep mode the video card reacts in a similar manner. A re-boot clears it up.
