Let's see if I have this straight. One post says don't leave them in the camper. A second post says don't leave them at home. A third post says they should not bark. Where is the logic? In Florida, you can't leave them unattended in a vehicle and to expect a dog not to bark is like expecting a child not to cry.

There is no perfectly safe way to leave your dog alone. You can leave your dog in a house and have it burn down, or leave your dog in the yard and have someone steal or poison him. Happens all the time. But the fact is, you can't take your dog everywhere you need or want to go, so you have to come up with the safest approach you can for your circumstances.

When RVing, weather is one big factor and the dog's behavior is another. If the weather is very hot, then you run the risk of the a/c failing and the dog overheating. There are systems you can buy to alert you to that, or you can just not leave the dog for more than an hour or so in really hot weather, if it isn't something that comes up often.

Exercise before being left is important and many leave the tv or radio on and/or a fan, to mask outside noises. I generally ask a neighbor or the manager to let me know if they hear any barking, and emphasize that it isn't normal, so I do want to hear about it.

Never been a problem. We usually tell a "neighbor", and ask them to call our cell phone if there is barking. Never had a call yet.

We train our dogs from day one it is NEVER ok to bark inside the TT. Works for us.

I trained my dogs too, and they agreed. But having the mind of a child, I have a feeling they are negating their word sometimes just to be naughty.

We go for a good walk before leaving them in the camper. I leave the radio on and turn the central fan from auto to on and that creates a little white noise so they won't be startled by anything they hear outside.

We usually come back to happy rested dogs ready to get out for another walk.

Most all public and a lot of the private CG forbid leaving pets alone when gone. Most do not realize they do not hear their dog barking when they are gone but the whole CG does. Sounds like another irresponsible act by pet owners not to comply with the CG rules.

That's not our experience with private campgrounds at all. Most simply state "dogs may not be left unattended." When I call and ask--and I always do--I've yet to be told that it's not okay to leave our dogs alone in our RV.

We did encounter one campground's website that specifically stated no dogs were to be left alone, including inside an RV. No problem, we just gave our money to another campground.

As far as knowing whether or not dogs bark when left alone -- It's very easy to leave an inexpensive voice-activated recorder on while you're gone.

For all the complaints about barking you'd think that it's an ever present persistent problem. We just don't see it. Maybe it's the expectations some have just don't fit the reality of parking in a campground where the population density is pretty high and you tend to be close to others.

I have far more issues with neighbors barking dogs at home than ever in campgrounds.

I'm with Pawz, not including those that ban pets entirely, almost all we go to specifically state dogs left unattended outside, very few specifically state or mean left inside your camper (Michigan state parks an exception).

BTW we are out now, the only barking I heard was from two schnauzers next door and only when I took Jill and Charmin out, and that was for about 10 seconds.

It appears you have forgotten these are people parks not dog parks. If you multiply those 10 seconds of barking times every camper with a dog that barks every time anything moves you have more barking time than quiet time and isn't that why we go camping??

Quiet time certainly isn't the reason we RV.

Not really. I guess it's expectations. There are probably some noises more irritating to different people, like finger nails on a chalk board. The guy next to us let his diesel "warm up" for 20 minutes this morning. Much more irritating than 10 seconds of barking from the inside of the RV (the barking was barely audible from about 20-30 feet away).

If that degree of barking or other noise is disruptive, perhaps a boondocking site would be a better choice, definately a park that does not allow animals or kids.
