Last evening, we had some rumbling from the sky. Sage got herself so worked up, she was vomitting. She's 12 years old. She has been with us since she came here as an 8 week old rescue.
She was fine up until about two years ago. She started not going into the kitchen if the gas grill was turned on, out on the deck. That has progressed to the point if the exhaust fan is running, anything is cooking on the stove, or even if the oven is turned on - she won't go into the kitchen.
If the oven is turned on, she's the perfect lap dog. She's up on the sofa, shaking like crazy.
I've tried rescue remedy. After seeing her throw up last night, I decided to take the plunge and get her a Thundershirt. I'm anxious to see how she does with it. She is tolerating having it on. The skies are dark. Waiting for the storm to come -- my luck, it will probably blow right on by. They are pricey but I'm told you can return them if they don't work.
Anyone else ever use any of these?
Whatever hits the fan will not be evenly distributed.

We use the thundershirt with our 1 1/2 year old cavachon to try to help him relax in the car. He tends to get car sick. It seems to help him somewhat. We still need to give him some vet prescribed anti-anxiety medicine but the thundershirt by itself has made him less anxious in general.

I have many clients that have used them with success. A few they have not worked. I'd estimate success was somewhere around 75% (very non-scientific survey ),
We got one for Jill but we have so much trouble getting it on. She becomes dead weight and curls into a ball so trying to get the right flap in the right place then the velcro attached was just too big an issue.
Good luck with Sage, If the storm coming is part of the same one that rumbled through here about 7 am this morning, it's a doozie.

We got one for our Vinnie. He is terrified of thunderstorms and starts shaking and gagging before we even know a storm is coming. With the thunder coat on, he is still nervous, but doesn't seem to shake and gag anywhere near as much. He has meds, but they only work if we get them in him about 45 minutes before the storm.
We are undergoing LOTS of remodeling right now. There are hammers, saws, and strange men talking all over the place. The second day, I wised up and put his thunder coat on him. He is much more relaxed in general. However, when they break out the nail gun- NOTHING works except wrapping him in a blanket and holding him in my arms.
You really have to get the thunder coat on tight. If it isn't tight enough, it doesn't do a thing.

We use one with the Maltese and it works for her. She doesn't like to hear the velcro sound when we take it off her.

I've been using one for about six months and it really does seem to help. I have a 13 y/o Jack Russell, and before the vest her whole body would shake terribly and she had very rapid panting. Of course she knows before I do when thunder is coming, so at her first sign of nervousness on goes the vest. My vet is selling a lot of them.

We use one on Lucy when we have company and it really helps. Without the shirt she would hide upstairs. With the shirt she will sit on my lap very relaxed. Everyone knows not to touch her and our friends are amazed at the difference.

A few days ago, TV News was showing a hailstorm. Our dogs were hysterical. I thought "That's good, because darn, it sounds exactly like a fire crackling." We don't have to worry about them not letting us know if they ever hear a fire.
Just one of ours still gets upset in a (rare here) thunderstorm. We put her winter jacket on her and that helps lots. Our old girl is mostly deaf and it's a blessing, as far as fireworks and thunderstorms go.

Use an appropriately sized T-shirt and cinch it up tight on the back, then tie it. I suggested this to both my kids. . . they use them now whenever there is a storm imminent. One dog is a standard poodle, the other is a lab/pit mix. My sister also has two 100+ lb labs she uses t-shirts on. They all swear by them. No need to go buy the expensive stuff unless you want to. At least the t-shirt will tell you if it's going to work.
Good luck!

That's true. I've read it on a lot of rescue and breed message boards for years. Anything that fits snugly seems to make a lot of dogs feel more secure. Somebody thought to market the idea and came up with a good commercial. Wish it had been me.
