I am inches away from purchasing a used bass boat. I have checked the laws in Michigan and I will be fine with length. TV should be sufficient as we have a 2500 diesel and our fifth wheel is 8400 lbs dry (boat weighs aprox 1500 lbs). I would like to have any opinions, good or bad, for those who have towed behind their fifth wheel. I plan on getting a hitch welded onto my fifth wheel frame for piece of mind. Thank you!

Have you checked with your rigs maker to see if the frame is up to this duty? A frame failure could ruin your finances fairly badly.

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

It is legal in less thabn 1/2 of the states to double hitch. The advie about checking w3ith the manufacturer is good advice. The limit in length is usuall 70 feet or less. Check with the states you will be in. Good luck.

Definitely check with the manufacturer. Mine said absolutely not.

I double towed eight years with a '90 2500 chevy 5.7 engine 4.10 axle with a 26' 7200 GVWR 5th wheel trailer and a 3400 lb bass boat.

I had a custom fabed hitch welded to the trailers main frame rails/crossmembers. No issues.

I drove 5 mph under the speed limits but never over 60 mph. Always plan the route ahead if possible especially some secondary state hiways through towns and maneuvering around fuel pumps.

My boat trailer could be seen in both of my mirrows. By watching the trailer you soon learn not to make those small quick steering input moves but a slower/smoother steering adjustments.

One thing I found was don't mix radials and bias ply tires in the combo.

Keep your speed down and forget about keeping up with the flow.

I have a 29' Laredo and tow my double jet ski trailer behind it all over the state of Michigan. I've never had any problems thus far. The biggest thing to be aware of is your length. It can make some gas stations and parking lots tricky. You don't want to try to back the whole thing up very far.

A friend of mine who is a very good fabricator and welder made the reciever hitch that is on the back of my trailer.

With my old Fifth I double towed with no problems. In Michigan the allowable lenght is 65ft. That is from the front bumper of your truck to the back of the boat. Also, Michigan has a recreational double endorsement that you should get on your license to make it legal. Cost is $15 and it is a written test only. You can get booklet at SOS website ( Michigan).

Towed double since 1993 when we bought our first FW, a Jayco Eagle 215SD. We had the dealer put the hitch on and towed a Bayliner Capri, a SeaSwirl Striper 1850, a Sea Hunt Escape 220 and a Crestliner Superhawk 1900, with no troubles. Purchased a new FW, 2012 Jayco Eagle SuperLite HT 26.5 RLS, had a hitch custom welded on the frame and have pulled the Crestliner a couple of times this year over 300 miles with no problems. I don't believe that over half the states do not allow double-towing, please give us a link to that set of rules.

I don't agree with bldrbuck I'm in the process of building a swivel trailer (as soon as honerable son-number-one's new inground pool and landscaping is finished that is)and i'v reserached what states do and don't allow,go for it,just make sure your overall length is good and don't half-azz the hitch and such,do it properly and do it once!!
