I have found a teton homes fifth wheel about 40' (it has 3 axels) the year is about a 2000 and it has been sitting without being used. The owner bought it to travel then the husband got sick and passed away so they only used it once.
The outside is very faded, it needs a new roof, tires and other things from sitting. The inside is like new. I can buy this for about $3,000. My question is it worth buying and fixing up? I plan on retireing in a couple of years and this would be great to travel and live in. Also would a new GMC 3500 diesel be enough trusck to haul it? Any help pro or con would be appreciated
I agree with the first reply. Especially if it's just two of you travelling. A three axle 40' fiver is, in my opinion, overkill, unless you have a toyhauler. In addition, this RV you are looking at would require, at the very least, a dually one ton pickup. I would keep looking and think smaller.
That would be an interesting find, Teton made quality trailers back then. Has the roof leaked any, that would be my concern I believe I would pay a good rv tech give it a good look over to see if he could find any water damage, if he found water damage in the walls or sealing I would walk away. If no water damage you could put on a new roof and get a full body paint and new tires and still be around 1/2 price of a new unit. If you new 350 has duals I think you could pull it.

IF its has not leaked (unlikely ) but be careful have a pro look at it .
I would jump on it worth a full body paint and new upholstery ,rebuld runnig gear .
But you need a massive truck for that trailer and it wuill cost plenty
- full paint $15,000 to 18,000
- inside budget another $5000
-running gear who knon? say $500 per axle
- truck ,new or used $30 to 40,000 at least
so its not a $3000 trailer ,but when your done you have a rig people have paid over $200,000 for (truck and trailer.

We winter in Casa Grande az and have since 2002. A 1999 40 ft teton has been parked in one site until last season when another couple bought it. He applied liquid rubber on the roof and used rd max pro #3 on the faded exterior. what a difference it made. I feel it is on the big side but it was a great fifthwheel.

FIrst of all, TETON Homes is a VERY heavy trailer so heavier than other 40ft fivers so 350 with diesel engine is NOT enough in my opinion. Teton Homes is NO LONGER so it is an orphan which means parts are going to be hard to find going forward. $3000 is only a start, does it need a roof or you just want to do it, tires are a must and at many hundreds EACH, and who knows what has gotten into your heating and refridgeration systems and the fixes, I think it could cost you more than you really think.

Roof? Absolutely.
Why have it painted now? Why not give it a good wax/restore and see how it looks, first?
OP says the interior is "like new"; why refurb something that doesn't need it?
Used one time? Why refurb the running gear, unless absolutely necessary? Have a tech check and repack the bearings, and check and adjust the brakes.
Tires, absolutely, and go with the best.
Truck? From what I've read about Teton, a 350/3500 series would be marginal to haul this and a 450/4500, or bigger, would be a much better choice.
