Better read the OP's post again...talking LARGE dogs not 20 pounders.

I don't threaten either and for you to infer that I do is 'irresponsible' and actually uncalled for. I have the experience, training and credentials to be 'responsible'.

You better read it again....while the OP had an isolated incident with a few dogs(none of which attacked anyone), the main thrust was with "why doesnt the campground enforce leash laws/rules" , I content in this instant, the OP is talking about unleashed dogs within a campground setting! You, on the other hand stepped right up to the plate and brought up guns....that my friend is irresponsible and I dont care how much training, experience or ability you have. I dont need to stand on a soap box and exclaim my training but surfice to say, Ive got it too. We'll have to agree to disagree on this one!

This isnt the first or last time these same issues come up....but I wonder just How many dogs have you shot in a campground? Im guessing None, so unless I began to hear of a rash of dogs being shot for being unleashed in a campground setting, Ill go on believing that its not a common occurrence. Does it happen, Im sure it has and will again, but with the number of dogs and the number of RV'ers that interact each and everyday, the incident rate is extremely low. Couple that with the incident rate of actaul unleashed dogs(as some posters want everyone to believe).....then I think the picture is complete. I happen to be a Dog person and in my experience, including going into unknown backyards where large dogs were present, never did I have to consider the use of deadly force on a dog.....once again, in my experience in a large Metro area(LA).

With all the little bickering aside.....you need to get in touch with someone in charge as has been said. There are and always will be jerks out there, I love my dog but not everyone else does so I keep him under control (leash) and he is a monster (8 lb malti-poo)

I love my dogs tremendously, and they stay leashed for their own safety. Bears have a way of showing up unannounced. And they like to chase squirrels and chipmunks. Leash laws are For every person's and every pets safety

And during check-in, ask for the 24 hour phone number. when called, they do not divulge who called in the complaint.

Hi,
we're new to camping/rving and are out for a number of months
heading from the northwest back to Florida. Our preference
is for camping in the national forests. We have had many
problems with people with their dogs, and we're talking large
dogs, not on a leash. twice, while heading to a restroom,
ladies have left the dog outside, loose while she uses the
facility. These dogs have been agressive. One woman using
a shower had three dogs, loose, and one was a pit bull would
not let me anywhere near the restroom. the husband came by,
put one with the wife, and told me point blank he would not
put his dogs on a leash, with a string of profanity.
do people feel that because its a gov't park/forest they
don't have to follow rules? We've been in washington, oregon,
california, and nevada and every park or forest has had a big
sign that says dogs must be on a leash.
can anyone explain this?
thanks

Sorry your question maybe has taken a turn away from what you were asking.

My original comment said to contact a camp host if there was one where you were.

The rest of my reply is to what I do in case a threatening issue comes up and materializes. No it never has and hope it never does but I will never second guess myself for being prepared in case something does happen.

Oh...and we have two #40 cockers....on leashes.

Hope some of the comments are what you wanted to read...we are all good in our intent.

I used to be a uniformed volunteer with the US Forest Service and this subject came up rather often at campgrounds.

As has been said, report the situation to the Campground Host, or Forest Service Personnel who if they cannot resolve the issue, will inform the USFS Law Enforcement Officer for that Ranger District. In dire emergencies, of course, call 911 for local Law Enforcement.

For those that may be interested, the specific "ordinance" covering this is: Code of Federal Regulations - Title 36; Chapter II; Part 261; Subpart A; Section 261.14 Developed Recreation Sites which states: "The following are prohibited: . . . (j)Bringing in or possessing an animal, other than a seeing eye dog, unless it is crated, caged, or upon a leash not longer than six feet, or otherwise under physical restrictive control."

My dogs are 20-30 pounds and I have seen them think they need to protect me. You would not want to be on the receiving end of it believe me. They can turn into the three headed demon dog when they feel threatened.
The other 99.9% of the time they are the most sweet and lovable furballs you'd ever see.

We had loose dogs in both of the campgrounds we were in last year. It drove our dogs nuts. Honey almost clobbered one lab because it was dark and a large black animal came around the trailer in bear country.

We went back to boondocking where there are no dogs running around. Ours don't because one of the critters up there might think there names are snack, cracker and cheese. Staking your dog out on a tether is the equivalent of STEAKING out bait.

To the OP, you should talk to the host or ranger. It's unacceptable to feel threatened by unattended dogs. A pitbull that shows that type of aggression is a step away from a attack. Be careful.
