Hi my neighbor has asked me to help him with his pump problem and it is one that I haven't run into before so I need your help/suggestions.
He has a Shurflo 2088-403-144 series pump and the problem is:
After he has filled up his holding tank and filled up the hot water heater and has bled all the taps and toilet for any air the pump shuts down like normal and then without any taps been turn on the pump will start up for a few seconds and then shutoff again. My first thought was that there was a leak some where but that is not the case so we took of the inlet line and replaced it with a clear line going in to a container of water and the same thing happens except that we know notice that it is not drawing any water from the container just that the pump goes on for no reason that we can find. We have replaced the valve and thought we had it fixed but no so lucky. What am I missing as if you ask at a RV shop they just want to sell you a new pump. Hope to hear from someone soon.

Have you checked the city water fill port?

Pull the head of the pump off and clean it. Could be a piece of sand or dirt stuck between the rubber seals of the pump.

I'm not very familiar with the water pump... but could the pump be leaking pressure back into the FW tank? Technically, the system would be leaking pressure only you would not see the leak as the water would go back into the supply tank.

If no leaks at any fittings
And the 'city water' connection isn't leaking water back thru it outside
Then it's probably the pump internal check valve leaking allowing water to back flow into fresh water tank.
The pump check valve is just a flapper.sometimes debris gets caught and holds them slightly open or they just loose ability to fully close due to age.
You can tear pump apart and clean it......or replace it......or install an in-line check valve on pump discharge line....or don't worry about until you hook up to city water and find fresh water tank over flowing.
Shurflo has in-line check valves.....

The system HAS to be bleeding pressure off of the water pump for it to turn back on after being pressurized. It COULD be a leak in the low point drains so any leaking water will be draining UNDER the RV not into it. It could also be a small leak in the water heater pop off valve or drain plug with the same result (water leaking outside of the RV) and as already mentioned, the city water inlet with the same outside leak. the other possibility is that the diaphragm of the pump is not holding pressure and the pressure is blowing back into the FW tank itself.

I wanted to report back and let you all know that I "think" I have found the problem with my neighbors pump. It looks like it was the check valve. We got a repair kit and installed it and right now its seeming to hold its pressure. So thanks folks for the suggestions and now my neighbor still thinks I know what I'm doing. Thanks once again.
