I want a chihuahua. I wanted to find out if, in general, they are mean. I seem to read that alot. I realize that training has a lot to do with it, but we've had miniature poodles, and miniature poodles mixed with another breed, that were total sweethearts. So my question is for chihuahua owners, are your chihuahuas grouchy or mean. If we were to get one, it would be from a shelter. I noticed that there always seems to be alot in the shelters. We do have other dogs, so getting along is important.
Any info would be of help. Thanks

My in-laws had several different chihuahuas. One was a bit aggressive to strangers, the rest were okay w/exception of a mini-chihuahua who was a sweet little girl. A lot of small dogs appear to be mean, but really aren't if approached with a gentle hand. If you like one, adopt it and love it--they will be your best buddy.

Little dogs are usually a mess mentally ... due to decades & decades of inbreeding..
Anecdotal stories are irrevalent, so what happened to your neighbor or aunt margaret doesn't provide accurate statistical data.

I have five of them, everyone has it's own personality. To say they are mean in general the answer is no, but they are territorial.

Do they get along with each other? Do you find that the females are nicer than the males?

Friends of mine had one, it was one mean little thing, only like his wife nobody else. neighbors had one, he barked at me all the time. He would come over to my place and I befriended him. He was a wonderful dog. He would come over and look into the house, if I left the front door open and just to say "Hi". He died about a month ago. I miss his daily visits.

Most of the Chihuahua's are nice. I had one for that just would not die. We had him for almost 14 years. The vet was very surprised he was that old. But, he was sweet when he was young, but after he started getting old and senile, he became a one family dog and didn't take to strangers very well.

I have 2, they don't like strangers at home but are generally ok with other people away from home. Like someone already said, territorial.

It is not usuual for a Chihuahua to bond deeply with one member of the family and then become protective or territorial around that person. This will appear as "mean."

A good effort to socialize the animal will prevent this. It is much better to socialize when the dog is young. (under 12 months old)

Probably irrelevant now, but as a kid when I was growing up, my aunt and uncle had about 3 chihuahuas. Only one at a time. But I know when we went to their house to visit, you sat still and kept your hands in your pockets if you wanted to leave with 10 fingers.
