My trailer came with this typical audio unit.

It doesn't sound very good and now the CD door is broken. I'm going to replace it.
In my last trailer I replaced a similar unit with a regular car stereo unit. To adapt the cutout size I got a cabinet door to match the other cabinet doors in the trailer and mounted it through that. The cabinet door wasn't a perfect match with the "paneling" but it was as close as the other cabinet doors were and I left it at that.

For this trailer I am having a hard time thinking up a way to mount a car stereo in the cabinet nicely enough that it looks like a factory installation. Suggestions?
A 120 volt "bookshelf" system would be the right shape - has anyone installed one of those with an inverter?

You could have a local machine shop fab you a plate for it to match the panel below your stereo. Something that size should be relatively cheap.

My conversion might not be up to factory standards but it's close enough for me. Also made a mount for the iPod, using Apple's standard USB connector, so it can be controlled via the radio's remote.
We boondock mostly so I like to stick with 12 volt as much as I can.
Good luck,

Here is what I did with my space. I built the box as it's own unit to the dimensions of the hole the OEM unit left. Slide it in and attached it from inside the cabinet.
I use the upper space for the iPod, CD case, remote, whatever and works very well for me.

Yes, but not for long periods at any one stretch. Maybe a couple of days, max.
Would a 120 volt unit with an inverter draw much more power than a 12 volt unit?

That's a great idea!

Super nice! I really like the idea of including the extra box above the head unit.

Nice work, Mitch, I like the rope trim!
I don't know, exactly, about RV players but all auto players follow DIN sizing and there are after market pockets or filler plates down to half-DIN sizing. The OP should be able to pull the oiginal player and install an auto player, filling any voids with aftermarket fill plate or pocket pieces.

I have made some good looking factory like panels out of black King Starborad. It cuts with normal wood tools. Here is my latest use of Starboard. Not finished yet. Going to be a AC display yet.
