Little Sable Light is one of my favorite lighthouses. If you want to take a day trip, drive north and see some things. Ludington SP is pretty and it has another lighthouse you can walk to (about a mile, parallel to the shore on a good track). Frankfort is a nice little town with a lighthouse and a beach. Sleeping Bear Dunes is worth seeing, too.

Thanks. I think Sleeping Bear dunes would be a bit of a drive, wouldn`t it? otherwise I would really like to see them!

It's good that you are going with someone who has been there before...but at times it could be hard to keep things in check. Take it slow and just cruise around as you stated until you know the dunes. If it's windy, the dunes can change almost daily. Watch were other people are going and what the dunes look like.

Speed can do a lot of damage. Take it slow, you can always back down. Resist the urge to just blow through water puddles if there are any. Some can be very deep. We saw a Ford Ranger once with the whole front end submerged with water up to his A pillars.

If you are planning to drive on the dunes on Saturday or Sunday, I think you need to get a voucher on Friday for your entrance time. But if your friend goes often, I am sure they know that procedure.

Sleeping Bear dunes would be about 2 hours straight north of there on 31.

Theres a nice beach a little south of town where a stream runs into lake mi. you can walk down the shore to little sable lighthouse from there. Nicer beach than the one at the state park. Lots of go cart places in town, mini golf ect at craigs cruisers. We like to hike up the dunes by the exit from the orv area and watch tbe mayhem on the sand dunes. Mac woods dune rides are fun and very informative about how the area was created and history. One of our favorite spots. We stay at Sandy shores park which is next to state park and very nice and regulated campground.

We practicality live there. The dunes are a blast but be careful of all the vehicles/quads/dirt bikes running around. The sunset over the dunes or at the lighthouse is beautiful. If you decide to catch a meal away from the campground then head into Shelby to the Brown Bear. The mushroom banana pepper burger is killer. I do not recommend any of the restaurants in town but The Points gas station has decent pizza though. The downtown area is really close to the State Park. If you have any questions just ask away.

About 120 miles, a little more than 2 hours. You can't drive the dunes in Sleeping Bear, but you can drive up the paved road to the top of the dune and see Lake Michigan far below you. Also there's a spot to hike up a fairly tall dune.

Looks like fun! I've been too chicken to go alone so I'm waiting for my BIL to get a truck too.

Dodge guy, I am glad you had a great time. It is a place you can get hooked on. I knew you wouldn't have any trouble with the Excursion. Starting labor day weekend we will have our trailer back up there for 5 weeks.
