I have a Sunline T-2670 and my problem is a sooty hot water heater, when I use the gas mode the heater leaves a big black sooty grime on the side of the aluminum siding above the exhaust . Is it dangerous? Can I repair this myself? Is this normal? Any help you can give me is really appreciated.

I would suggest checking the area where the flame is for an obstruction. Such as insects or debris. And including the tube where the flame exits the tank.

it has to do with improper combustion. As someone else said, check the burner for a blockage or partial blockage, sooting is an indication of burner too much fuel.

If you don't find any obstructions as the previous poster have suggested, adjust the air tube at the burner. Slide it to give more air.
I'm guessing you will find a spider web in the air tube.

In terms of owner-done RV maintenance, this isn't a tough job. They even sell a little flex-brush for keeping the burner tube clear. That said, if you don't have the owners manual or if you aren't familiar with what you are doing, find someone who is to do this work or to show you how. Most likely, a local propane company has a burner tech who can clean the unit and adjust the burner in adjust a few minutes. Since you can bring the burner to them, they likely won't bang you for a full-cost service call. Regardless, it will probably be done better and less expensively than letting the 19 y/o "technician" at the local RV dealership do it.

Adjust the Burner Tube! One little screw...loosen and slide the tube left or right to increase air flow. Too far and it will sound like a Jet Engine.

CAUSES FOR SMOKING AND SOOTING

Gas pressure incorrect --------------Set pressure to a minimum of 11? W.C. with two or more appliances running
Poor gas supply ---------------------Replace gas supply
Improper pilot flame ----------------Clean or replace pilot orifice
Improper air adjustment -------------Adjust main burner air shutter approximately 1/4 open
Flame spreader mis-aligned ----------Re-align or replace main burner
Blocked main burner -----------------Remove blockage
Improper main burner alignment ------Re-align main burner, main burner orifice holder and gas valve
Blocked ā€œUā€ tube --------------------Remove blockage

Clean burner tube and the 'U' tube (heating/exhaust tube). Blowing out with air will remove debris BUT will not get rid of spider webs. Spider webs are the biggest cause of 'obstructions'. Spiders LOVE the smell of propane. Run a bottle brush thru 'U' tube (need to remove burner tube for access)
Then run brush thru burner tube..re-install and then adjust air shutter. Blue flame with tinge of yellow at tip and fairly quiet.

Note that not all water heaters have an air shutter and a pilot light.
Also, having serviced RV's for over 25 years, I still have yet to understand how burner tubes, gas valves, flame spreaders and other parts that are phsically bolted, screwed, welded or rivited to an assembly, all of the sudden magically move on their own so an adjustment is needed. (?)
Unless, of course, something physically hit and then damaged one of the afore mentioned parts.

Bouncing down our wonderful highways occasionally moves my air shutter and I also re-adjust it depending on altitude. There's a big difference in air need (for combustion) from sea level to 10,000ft. The more one adjusts them, the more apt they re to move on their own.
