Does anyone out there know if a company makes a platform or deck that mounts on a tow dolly so that it can be used to haul something when not towing a car. I am selling my box trailer and would like to still be able to pick up a ton of stove pellets, but have a tow dolly for traveling. Any information would be appreciated.
You can buy a beam clamp for the hitch of your tow dolly, and then put one beam under the hitch, with 2 more going front to back, and one across the back just behind the axle on the tow dolly. With corner braces, and the plywood keeping the framework square, the only attachment really can be the one on the hitch bar. If you can't find the right size beam clamp, then a 8" long unistrut on the top, and the main from bar on the bottom will work, use 1/2" X 6" long bolts to hold them together.
You should be able to find Unistrut at your local electrical supply store, or perhaps even Home Depot.
Two thing to keep in mind:
1. A dolly has NO suspension system; no springs, no shock absorbers, nothing.
2. In some states, a dolly need not be registered, and need not have license plates. Utility trailers often must be registered and have license plates. If you install a conversion, you may have to license it as a "2012 Homemade Trailer". Check the laws in YOUR state!
