While on our third stay at Williston Crossing in Williston FL.we had a family emergency, when we advised the staff that we needed to leave one day early we were informed that they would charge us whether we stayed or not. We questioned them and were told that that was their policy. We had never been shown any such policy and had never signed anything in reference to policies or even a credit card bill. They never did produce a copy of this policy but they sure did charge our credit card.We have stayed in many campgrouds in the past and this has nere happened to us before.

Been there and done that. Emergency is an emergency, at that point, money doesn't matter.

This is a common policy where we live. In Oregon state parks and USFS. It stings a bit but I do understand the logic of it.

You held a spot on a park that someone else could have enjoyed. You had to leave, why do you feel the park owner should pay for that? They could have rented that site to someone else who would have enjoyed all nights, not sure why your emergency should cost them as you expect it to. It's kind of like expecting to get half your money back if you walk out of a movie or leave a drive in after the first show.. it's your choice, live with it. If it was an emergency, who cares about the cost, what's spent is gone.

I don't see that the park did anything wrong. We once paid for a month in advance at a park we found we didn't like and left two weeks early. We got no refund and didn't really expect to. But it was worth it just to get away from the place.

WI state parks will give a refund if you leave early for any reason. Most private campgrounds I've been to don't give refunds.

It would have been nice if they're refunded your money but I don't see that they have an obligation to or that it makes them the bad guy.
They probably have people claim they have emergencies all the time trying to get out of a reservation and just have to put their foot down someplace. (Not in any way suggesting that's what you did)

It sounds like a reasonable, almost generous policy to me.
Michigan state parks charge a flat non-refundable registration fee when you sign up. They also charge a cancellation fee if you change your mind. Additionally, there is a fee if you change sites.
Besides making money for the state, it keeps people from arbitrarily making reservations they know they have a low probability of using. That is the intent. If it happens to seem a little unfair in the case of a family emergency, that is just the way it goes.
We had a family emergency while staying at an Encore Park. We were to stay there three months (Jan. - Mar.) but we had to leave after only six weeks. We totally lost the rent for the entire balance of the month of February, and had to swap March's rent for a one-month return visit in April. No refunds of cash. It didn't make me happy, but rules are rules.

Like others here I don't see why an emergency on your part should cost them money. It's sad that this happens but it does. Its kind of like going in a resturant, ordering a big meal and having to leave before you finish desert. Should the resturant just write it off because you didn't finish what you asked for?

In my perfect campground owners would be fair to their clients and if they rent out the spot they won't charge the person. But like my old friend use to tell me, throw a dollar on the table and watch the fight
