I was camping in a beautiful dispersed NF campground with a lodgepole pine grove closely surrounding us. After getting the 5er set up and leveledI decided to look around. To my surprise, I saw saw about half a dozen live trees that had been chopped down. These were up to 6 in. in dia..
I'm sure that it must have been some kid with some mindless parent that just sat there while the kid did it. When I got home I called the NF ranger district and told them. They thought that their ranger/officer may have visited the camp and may know who did it.
I hope parents will pay attention to what their kids are doing.
We were in a Wa. State CG one time when 2 young teens did the same thing to one small 6" dia tree that looked to be dying anyway. Their dad called the ranger over who lectured them and made them clean up the bathrooms and make themselves available for what ever duties the host asked them to.
All in all I think the situation was handled well for what was.

IMO most(not all) kids that camp are great, the problem is it only takes one moron (parent or kid)
(To cheap to buy new)
1990 37 ft 5th wheel that hasn't moved since 1996 (our best home)
1997 33 ft trailer (winter home in much warmer climate)

I have also seen trees cut in order to provide more room at a boondocking site, unfortunately.

You know they're not the sharpest knives in the drawer when they try to burn green wood.
Reminds me of a group of teens next to us who had rented a chainsaw($60) and worked all day cutting a green tree up, a trip to the emergency room, one came inches from losing a leg. Then couldn't understand why they couldn't light green 10 inch logs.
Shoot, you can by all the seasoned, split oak you want here for about $50 a TRUCK LOAD most times, all you want to load in your trunk for $15.
