Other than the amount dumped at one time the other major difference in gray water from an RV is that it is first kept in a holding tank. This can allow bacteria to grow if the conditions are right (water and a food supply make for good conditions). Tent campers don't keep their gray water in a holding tank first.

In the '60s in Hawaii (Kauai), our washing machine was on a back porch slab with the drain running under the slab and over to a banana tree. Had one boy in diapers (cloth). Soap in those days was full of phosphurs. Had the most giganticus flavorful bananas you every saw.

Water pollution by small users is rampant. There are numerous springs and small streams where they let their cattle use as neccessary. The water would support trout and other wildlife but is dangerous to us.
Cattle ruin a lot streams this way. It now not legal but no one presses it generally. There are many National Forest that has several streams that flow through and cattle, on just a few acres, on private land ruin the water. It looks clean but don't stand in it with a cut on your leg.
It truly is aggrivaiting, that the head waters, of a local little river, arise, from a large spring is pristine until at the foot of the mountain a few folks let their cows and pigs ruin the stream. Down stream other contribute to what would be a very, and was 25 years ago, healthy water way.

Out here on the western slope and SW corner of Co. the hosts were recommending to us to drain the grey water from our tanks, because it's so dry out here.

If while boondocking you left your grey tank open, you wouldn't be holding the water and letting it build bacteria. With a 50 to 100' hose, I don't see any problem, other than attracting critters to a wet spot..

We registered into a National Campground in Northern AZ. and the attendant said our totally full gray tank couldn't be dumped because his tanks were full. They had it hauled out. He then said it would be ok to dump it at the site. I felt guilty so I drained it in buckets and distributed it in different parts of the forest. The next day there was no sign of my dump. When we desert camp I always dump in the desert because the cactus may not see moisture for months. The amoeba brain before us dumped his black tank. We camp in an area where we may not see another camper for a week-end but even there it's possible to incur a subhuman species that would defile the desert.
The real problem, that these sub-human vacuum brains that communicate with grunts, are allowed to vote...

I was told by a "government official" that I could dump my gray tank where I was in a soon to be regional park. I don't believe it is legal and did not dump it. However, it seems like there is a lot of confusion over this issue.

If you want to worry about pollution, check out mining pollutants, fracking pollutants, chemical manufacturing pollutants..then talk about your grey water.
We are being bamboozled about the crud that is being pumped into our streams and food cycles..and told that putting some grey water on the ground is bad? cripes.

If you want a bad day..Google fracking in Pennsylvania.

As long as it "dries" quickly there is nothing wrong with dumping gray water on the ground, except that it is illegal. But the laws are made by people who don't understand what the are writing laws about.
