I know Cummins engines are top of the line, but I've noticed that many belch black smoke out their tailpipes. Why is that?

Yes, I know Ford and Chevy diesels do it too, but I live in an area where there are a LOT of diesel pickups (Wyoming), and just lately I've noticed that the smokers I see on the street more often than not have a Ram emblem.

If I'm wrong then I'm wrong but isn't that black smoke coming from the diesel when the operator puts the pedal to the metal.

diesels generally smoke more in summer. And most of the time if it smokes, its not stock.

black smoke is unburnt fuel. Some people think it cool and there trucks are fast because they smoke.

Any 2005 or new that smokes is "tuned" in some way or another. I know that as of 2008 Ford and GM have made significant improvements in turbo technology on their trucks. A proper tuned ford or GM will only have a quick smoke at take off then clean up to a light gray haze very quick. Not to many folks in my area drive dodges so I can't comment on them.

My guess is someone attempting to tune their truck themselves or doing it mechanically with fuel and boost overrides . This was common practice back in the old 12v days. Don't know about the newer 24v 5.9 or even newer 6.7

My '05 would smoke a little even when it was stock. It smokes a little more now but not bad. Just depends on what I have the box on and what I'm doing. If they are built right they will only leave a small fog trail. More than that and it's a waste until you get into some serious power like 700+ to the ground.

Depending on year.

If it is EPA 2008/10 it should have little visible smoke. It is equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter.

Prior years will smoke a bit normally at heavy applications of throttle even from stock.

Now, that is for the legitimate ones.

The bad news:

Many owners of these vehicles, especially the younger kids set, think it is good fun to add modifications to it like a tuner, disable the emissions gear, and in some cases, intentionally generate black smoke.

There is little local enforcement of the law in most cases (for now), and they get away with it.

The net result is the diesel light truck fleet disproportionately contributes to air pollution.

That is changing slowly --- as manufacturers make it harder and harder to tamper with emissions gear, but not anywhere near fast enough.

Tuner and other mod makers are gradually coming on the EPA radar, and shops that advertise emissions delete / tamper services are also gradually being logged in a great database.

The big change is coming in mid-decade, when the "off road" exemptions are coming to an end and firms can no longer plausibly claim their stuff is "for off road use only".

Wait until after November (election) and expect to see a few companies being made examples of.
