We are having trouble with our black tank gauge as it seems to register 3 dots (2/3 full) even after we dump. We filled it completely full with water and drained again and it was better, but after the next dump it still read almost full. I am assuming that something is interfering with the gauge, but how can we fix it? Is this a common problem, as we had the trouble in our earlier TT as well?

Hi,

The gauge fouls in most RV's. I more or less ignore mine now.

There are sensors which are little metal studs in the side of the tank. As you fill up the tank, the liquid and other matter touch the studs and cause you to get an indication of the level in the tank. As you are experiencing, crud don't always come off the studs. I crawled under mine to check it out and they didn't even install the sensors correctly. there is only 1 inch gap between off 4 sensors with a 5 inch gap between the top sensor and the top of the tank.

You are better off just looking down the the toilet and seeing where the level is. I have a family of 5 and we can't fill the black tank in a weeks time if that gives you any indication of how much material the tank should hold, but then again, different campers have different size tanks. You will get to know yours over time.

Good Luck.

Very common problem, It would take a very through cleaning and that is a constant uphill battle.

I put water softener and detergent in mine.
While driving down the road it will register 2/3 full just from the soap coating the tank walls.
I too have learned just to ignore mine.

It's a common problem, this has happened to me once or twice- So far, my fix has been to put ~10 gal of water in our 40 gal tank and drive around with it to get some good sloshing going. Good luck- and know that you can look down the hole (and use experience) to know when things are getting full.

I completely ignore my gauges. None of them work properly. Sometimes the grey tank is OK but other times it's not. The black tank always ready at least 1/2 full. After 9 years with this MH, we kinda know when to dump. Have never had the black overflow, but the grey bubbles into the shower and I go out and dump.

It is common when cleaning of the tank is insufficient to clean the sensor.

Looking down the toilet doesn't always work. My winnebago toilet was over the wheel well. The waste had to make a 90° turn to enter the tank. Not a good design.
