If you ever even thought you might want to try clamming then GO! We went for the first time ever yesterday and had a blast! My two girls, while having a little trouble pulling the clam gun out, thought it was almost as good as our halibut trip and like one said, "it's almost like searching for buried treasure". The clams were big and tasty. We got 60 which is only the limit for one person but it was more than enough for a couple meals and some to freeze. One word of warning however, at least for Ninichik, there are mud flats and there is a reason "most", people walk around them. After sinking to nearly the top of her boots my wife was able to extract herself before a coast guard rescue became necessary.

Theclam gun is just a metal tube with a T handle on the top with an air hole in the handle you jab the gun down in the sand cover the air hole with your finger and pull up the column of sand and if you are fast eniugh the clam will be trapped in the sand and won't have gone deeper.
We disvered that in a pinch it makes a good cheater bar for getting lug nuts loose on a flat tire on the rv...
We had a little bit of trouble loading the little clam-gun pellets. Boy were they tiny. ;-)
Clamming at Ninilchik was a highlight of our trip too. After a lackluster start, DH became hooked and we had to make a second stop on our return from Homer to spend a few more days clamming. Great fun.
Are you going halibut fishing out of Deep Creek? It is a hoot to watch the Skidders launch and retrieve the fishing boats.
Our campground "neighbor" was gracious enough to teach DH and myself how to "clam" at Ninilchik because it was a new experience to us. After missing the clam a few times, I found it best to pull the gun out quickly and plunge my whole arm into the hole and feel around for the clam. I had good success and our teacher got a smile out of it. Fun, but the work was just beginning because we had to clean them too ! Memories !
