Maggie, our about to be six (yrs. old) has started bumping into things at night. Otherwise, she is in very good health and gets regular medicals; i.e. twice per year. Her next vet. appointment is in Oct. of this year. Should we wait or ask for an earlier exam?

I would get her in now. Maybe a referral to an eye specialist if necessary. We had a cocker that started going blind at age 6. Nothing we could do except NOT move furniture around. She learned the house layout and got along fine. Only when we took her to visit family would she have anxiety attacks cuz she was bumping into everything (not her house).

She should go in now. Blindness at night may also mean her eyesight is very fuzzy during the day, allowing her to make out shapes but not clearly. We had a delightful toy poodle who was blind, had cataracts removed, then went blind again. She got along quite well inside tho I had to carry her outside but always put her down in the same spot.

I'd take her in now, personally. See if it looks like there is anything to be done, or if it could be related to another problem that may need treatment.

Here's an update on Maggie and the results (comments) from the Vet on her suspected 'night' blndness. Maggie's fine! Seems her "bangs" grew too long and it since she's more interested in smelling the ground at night then looking ahead - so she bumps into stuff.

We'll continue to ask her groomer to clip the spot over her eyes and stop thinking the worst!! BB

glad Maggies problem is so easily remedied, even if it did cost a bit at the DVM's to find out she needed a hair cut

I have a blind cat that lost his eyesight as a kitten. If you just saw him in the house you would never know he was blind. He is pretty fearless (jumps from place to place and climbs). The giveaway is if he loses track of where he is and runs into a wall or when he tries to climb dow, he will feel until his paws touch something solid. If he knows the height and it's low, he just jumps. Will attack toys, the other cats, and our dogs without hesitation. For a long time, my husband swore he had some sight. But not possible- one eye completely gone and the other is all white.
