I'm traveling in Florida right now and last time I looked Florida was in the USA. I stopped at the grocery store for some fresh fruit. This was so unbelievable I just had to take a picture of it. The manager got all huffy about too.

What's wrong with this picture?

When I was a kid I remember citrus groves everywhere. Many of the growers sold their land to developers during the boom because of Citrus Canker regulations. Most of the citrus trees on the south east coast have died from other pest and diseases that were ignored while they were fighting Canker. There are a lot of groves in central Florida that mostly grow juicing citrus.
Also the citrus demand is year round while local picking season is only a few months out of the year. The same holds true for all "fresh" food.

Because they can ship them in cheaper than the labor cost here. Was just in Hawaii and most all of the suger cane and pinapple growers are gone due to labor costs.

My DW is looking for a job and can't find anything even close to what she was making. Most are just over minimum wage and no benifits. I may have to become a fulltimer if this keeps up.

Kinda think shipping them from California has got to be cheaper than Africa! At least we'd know they were sprayed with approved pesticides.

Risky pesticides on sale in Africa
Each year around 30% of the US$900 million pesticides marketed in developing countries do not meet internationally accepted quality standards. They are posing a serious threat to human health and the environment, according to a joint statement from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

So they ship them here for us to eat?

Because it's NOT the season for Fla oranges.
Lets see, south of the equator so it's winter and guess when oranges are in season in Fla?

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

Amazing Ivy. Because it's Fla., people think they should be able to walk out and pick oranges anytime, just like they should be able to pick peaches in Ga. at anytime.

If you want fresh oranges in Florida at this time of year, they have to come from somewhere else. The most recent crop won't stay fresh this long, and the beginning of the next crop is at least a couple months away.

A grocery store (restaurant, mall, business office) is private property, so you actually need owner or management permission to take pictures, but staff won't usually call you out on it. But taking pictures of price signs, particularly, can get someone's attention fast.

Yes, we ALL 'know' that.

Usually you will see oranges from California filling in the off season of Florida across all the states. IMHO, JMHO AFRICA is certainly NOT the country where we should be getting our produce. There are enough growing seasons thru out US for produce that we do NOT need to import them from of all places Africa, or countries you can't even find on a map.

Dole pineapple - from a foreign country
Generic pineapple - Hawaii USA

Go figure.

I look at ALL labels now and refuse to buy any produce/food that is not from the USA period.
