We are in the market for a good used popup for occasional use but it seems almost every unit is priced way over NADA value. A lot of owners are asking as much as 3x the NADA retail value. Am I crazy or are they? I can't bring myself to pay way over book value. I'm talking 1990 to 95 aged units that sold for about $4500 new and now they still want $1500 to $2500. NADA on these things run between $500 and $800 for the smaller units. I'm really up in the air on what to do.

I'm seeing that here also, but not quite 3x. I'm trying to help a friend find a popup. Most are between $1000 to $1500 over NADA. But remember that NADA is just a guide, selling values vary depending upon the local market.

I guess they only go so low...if it is fully operational a 95 will go for 2500 here in Canada...crazy price but it is the starting point...I am selling my 10 foot 208 flagstaff which is near mint for 4800.00. Havent looked at new pop ups but you must be able to get one for around 6000 in the US I would think...It took me 2 months to find the one I have...a lot of trailers are in real bad shape for mildew and dirt.

anything is only worth what the highest bidder is willing to pay. (Has nothing to do with NADA).

PUPs are holding their value well because of this economy. It is the one way that most people can actually still go camping.

Most families have a minivan and a hand ful of kids. A minivan can tow a PUP just fine, and a PUP can sleep a massive amount of kids. It is a win-win for most families today.

PUPs will keep their values as long as unemployment is 8-10%

I don't think I have every heard of a older pup selling at NADA price. I am looking at different pups and asked the dealer I purchased from what mine was worth if I traded it in. They quoted me low asking price, without looking mine just from info I gave them. Their asking price on the pup I was looking at was 25% less than I could find any online. They have the same make, model, and year as mine on their lot sold and were asking 75% of what I paid new for mine 9 yrs ago.

It is just supply and demand that drives the price. Most RVs of any type have a point where the price doesn't really drop anymore. We looked for used for awhile and I know the top of the line 1995 Sequoia we bought ran almost $10,000 and now I have seen them for as high as $4,900 but think of what other things cost in 1995.

We just bought a new Coachmen pop-up for almost $10,000 and the quality doesn't match the Coleman although we do have ac and a 3 way fridge but still felt it was a good deal over a 15 year old unit at half the price. When we were shopping, we saw units of different price ranges. If you can swing new, it is the way to go if you are going to use it and keep it for awhile. The problem with used is that the cushions are almost always shot and replacement is expensive just for the foam. Tires yet another expense. Sometimes you can find a seller that doesn't realize what they are really worth and lets one go rather cheaply but I am not that lucky!

We considered building a teardrop but never got it done.

We are just looking for something small and light for occasional weekend trips. We have a 2011 5th wheel that is permanently parked at a family house on a lake which is great & free! This is our 1st year as stationary "campers" and we are already getting the urge to take some short trips. We will not be able to tow the 5er again for a few years after the kids are done with college so this is our best option.
Maybe it's just me but I know I wouldn't buy a used car for more than NADA and I'm finding it hard to justify doing that for a 15 to 20 year old popup. We have found a great unit, 1991 Starcraft StarFlyer but they're asking $1650 and NADA says $560. That's a huge difference that I just can't wrap my head around. I may just have to bite the bullet if I want to do this..

Really to me year really doesnt matter its the condition the pup is in. $560 isnt to much at all for that price I would assume no furnace fridge not working wheel bearings and tires needing replaced and the canvas either torn to shreads or full of mold and mildew. But some have gotten lucky and found great deals like that just from people wanting to dump them fast not caring what they got for there pup.

$560 in my neck of the woods gets a camper that needs $1k worth of work and with hardly any comforts. Usually the canvas and screens have holes and tears and numerous other problems. In 12 yrs of camping I have never thought NADA was a accurate price point. Craigslist, RVtrader, and Ebay have pups selling for hundreds and even thousands over NADA privately, which is a clear indication to me their numbers are way off.
