We are planning a trip to the Chattanooga area, so I went to a mapping program (Rand McNally) to find the "best" route.
It said 1729 miles, with a total travel time of 1 day 26 minutes+. OK, I can handle that.
Then DW says "Can we go by way of Branson, MO?"
I say, "Sure, no problem, I'll just add a waypoint to the computation!"
Which I did...
Now, going by way of Branson and Nashville, it is 1251.3 miles, with a total travel time of 18 hrs 52 minutes!
Lesson (re)learned: Never trust a computer!

Computers are only as good as their operators.

Oops. Stupid mapping program allowed you to drag Chattanooga to Branson.

I think you misread it. That is the mileage Billings to Branson, your waypoint. Then you gotta add the mileage from there to Chattanoga.
And don't forget those are estimated travel times, i.e. time actually on the road. Does not include time for fillups, eating, rest breaks, etc. That can really add to your total time.

Whoops!
Obviously, "Total distance" does NOT mean TRIP TOTAL!
Which also goes to show, do NOT trust computers!
I am well aware of the "estimated" travel times. It also doesn't include the time lost due to construction or accidents.
I am also aware that our overall AVERAGE speed will not be 55 MPH even though I usually travel at 65 MPH.

I am estimating three days, perhaps four, for the trip.

If the damfool machine isn't smarter than me, it just ain't much good!

You know, my Dad used to estimate his trip time at 50mph and that was 30 years ago, but I'll be damned if it isn't still about as close as anything else. (that's with stops and all).

You have to set putter map program to type of roads, miles to travel per day, speed.computer only as smart as the person using it.

We just use google maps...it usually offers several different routes. You can also add multiple destinations into it. You just got to make sure you that you put your last stop as the last destination. Simple and free.

x2 on the 50MPH estimate. I've used it for years and when you add fuel, rest areas, food, etc. it works out pretty close.
