You should get a water softener. ASAP. The Apache Junction water caused our water heater to rust out, and our 5th wheel, is only 4 years old! Had to replace it. They cost around $400 on sale!
With a water softener, you will have to recharge it with salt or whatever kind you have at least twice a month. Also you will need to replace your water filter often. Apache Junction has some of the worse water for RVs we have ever seen. But will take AZ in winter anyway. We love it there!
Our water softener is called "on the go". We bought the larger size because we have a washer and also a dishwasher.
You can order them on line.
We did flush out our water heater often so it is the water that caused the failure of the water heater.
That Apache Junction hard water will get on your faucets and pipes if you don't have a water softener.

You had a Suburban water heater? If so, weren't you changing the sacrificial anode? It an Atwood, then it can't rust out because it isn't steel. So I'm a little confused as to what actually happened.

A Culligan or equal filter plumbed in to your water inlet. The entire 5er. is filtered, even the toilet. When the filter is no longer good, replace it. You can buy several levels of filter elements, from simply removing dirt etc., to having the same quality as bottled water. If you can't or don't want to install a fixed unit you could try a 5gal. bucket with a screw off lid, available at most hardware stores. Put the same filter as mentioned in line and leave it tucked under or beside your rig. It works as well as the other, you just have to accomodate a 5gal. bucket.
