1972, Adirondacks. We stopped to fill the tank, my father did the check-fluids /check hitch thing, my mother went inside the store. My father went inside the store. I sat in the Travelall. My dad came out, got in, drove away.

"uhm, Daddy?"
"SHH, I'm driving."

He discovered his wife gone, nearly jack-knifed the Avion turning around to go back. How was it he didn't miss her in the front seat?

It was a very quiet ride after that. For about 3 days after that, actually.

We have never forgotten someone, but when I was 13, my parents left me at Logan Airport! They noticed when they got home & my luggage was there, but not me. I'm *almost* over the trauma!

Rotary Clubs like other service organization's "recognize" members using a light hearted method involving "fining" members for things they have done. Its a way to make money from membership to fund programs. If the President finds out you did something silly, your name was in the newspaper, you bought a new car or other big ticket item, you will be recognized during a weekely meeting. The President then will access a fine of $10 to $100.00 which goes into a fund. Fines vary from club to club and members agree to be accessed, normally setting a limit based on what they wish to donate.

Not all "left behinds" are accidental. A number of years ago I was waiting at a service station for some parts to be delivered. The manager and I were talking about I don't remember what and he happened to mention that earlier in the day and older couple had stopped. The lady went into the restroom and the guy immediately drove off stranding her.

My thought exactly.

Of all things you forget your significant other that would ride in the seat on the side of you? How do you NOT see what person missing!? I haven't forgotten anyone yet and hopefully I never do!

My thinking is the wife was riding in the back of the MH. He never heard nor saw her get out and go into the store. In this scenario, I could see this happening. The story does not suggest she was sitting up front with him.

But to Artemus, who is the rotary, and why the fine? Or was that tongue and cheek?
