HELP!!! We are on the road and our generator keeps cutting out as we drive. Not sure why- nothing is popping- it keeps running but the AC and other electric items are turning off?!?!? WHY?? Any ideas on how to solve this one? Will check back in once we get to another wi-fi spot in Canada (Ontario- Niagara Falls area).

Go to Flight Systems and download their Trouble Shooting PDF. But you might also check your oil & coolant levels.

Would help if you mentioned the brand of genset you have.

Low oil in the genny would be my first guess. They all have low oil shut-off systems, and when the oil level gets down right to the ragged edge, they'll start, run for a minute (long enough for the oil to get spread around the engine and the level at the sensor to drop), then cut off.

How empty is your gas tank? The generator intake from the gas tank is usually at eh 1/4 tank level. It's to prevent your generator from draining your tank and leaving you stranded. If you're driving along with 1/4 tank the gen. may have trouble finding fuel.

I may be wrong guys but I read the OP's plight as being the gen. keeps running but the AC(air conditioner) and other electic appliances are cutting out, not the gen. motor.

What do you have to do to get the appliances back running off the generator?

Reset breakers on generator reset?

Tap on ATS?

Nothing-- they just come back on their own?

Laman has it correct. \the \genset keeps running but the AC and TV, etc stop working.

Wolfe10
I turn the gen off and then turn it back on and everything runs for a while till it does it again. Not sure what the ATS is.

ATS= Automatic Transfer Switch

You need to identify at what point you loose 120 VAC with the generator continuing to run. If you are safe working around 120 VAC with a voltmeter, remove the lid to the ATS. Check generator IN contacts, then the OUT contacts to the 120 VAC breaker box. That will tell you if power is reaching the ATS/going through the ATS to the breaker box.

Does this happen with light loads on the generator or only with heavy loads?

Wplfe10 is exactly correct, as usual. Let us know first if your comfortable working around electricity if the answer is yes you need to find out where the voltage is being lost per Wolfe10.
