hey all,

I just picked up a new to me 5er.. a 2007 palomino puma 285bhs..

I already knew when I picked it up that the battery was probably shot... I added about 1/2 gallon of distilled water to it before hitting the road for a 6 hour drive home.

when I got home, the battery was hot.. not warm, but HOT... there was also a major sulfur smell coming from it.. just glad it didn't blow up..

After that 6 hours of charging, it can't even power 1 little light...

so, question is, how unsafe is this battery? I've disconnected it from the truck and it's not plugged into A/C, but it is still wired to the RV... After it cools down, is it safe to disconnect it and chuck it in the trash can (kidding... will turn it in properly)..

I just don't really want to go near it if there's a chance it could still blow up...

additional question... when connected to truck power.. is it safe to assume that either the truck or the converter knows when to stop charging a battery? if the battery got to a full charge, it would stop right? or how is that supposed to work on a good battery?

thanks all

b

stop charging it then: goggles and gloves after it cools and you should have no issues.

I'd disconnect it completely to start with. It sounds like it is shot. Any auto parts store can charge/test it; most do it for free. Get yourself a new one. If finances are an issue, good old Walmart sells Group 24 and 27 batts for around $75.

Sounds like a classic shorted cell case... Definitely get it unhooked from the trailer wiring... It will drain everything down and could blow a fuse between it and the converter/charger if you hook up shore power.

You don't hear too much these days of them blowing up but it could happen for sure... Back in the old days the way to charge batteries was to slap a 200WATT 12VDC charger on the poor batteries for a couple of hours. They used to blow pretty regular back them.

I would take it to a battery store or wally world or where ever you are going to buy a new battery and give this one to them as your core. it has an internal short and should not be used for any thing, esp a boat anchor.

I agree, battery is shot. Time for a new one.

Por Favor, do even go near that critter without splash proof goggles (the type that has side visors to protect from spray) and wearing a pair of cheap nitrile gloves!

Battery acid heated to 50C 122F stands an awful possibility of rendering total and complete blindness if it is splashed into the eyes. Instant, total and permanent blindness. Be scared.

X2; GET THAT BATTERY DISCONNECTED AND OUT OF THERE NOW! IT'S A SHORTED BATTERY AND COULD BLOW UP! Sorry for all the shouting but I had that happen to me once; noticed smoke coming from one of my batteries. I quickly disconnected it, let it cool down and removed both and replaced both. Good thing I noticed it and got it out in time. BE CAREFUL!

After it cools to a temp where you can comfortablly handle it (need not be room temp though in truth these days the ambient temps are well above 'Comfortable' in my book... Soon as it is cool enough it is 100% safe to disconnect, remove and haul to the battery recycle / sales center.

In fact you can unhook it now, no need to wait on that part HOWEVER a suggestion.

Before you unhook take a small can of spray paint (Testors) or bottle of nail polish (Your choice) RED, Paint all the wires on the POSITIVE terminal.

On the other end, you may (optionally) use black paint.

You can thank me later after you fail to post a "OH @#@#< Where does this wire go" post.. We get 'em all the time.

LOL... there's a cheat sheet sticker in there that says Black wire here.. .white wire here but that is a really good idea too...

I did get it disconnected and took it to Sams club... picked up a new 220A/h.. I see another couple of those in my future..

Sincerely appreciate the advice from everyone... I used to be an electrician, but DC still scares me.. I've seen what it can do in industrial settings and I equate the two.. AC is so much easier and friendly to deal with.. Now onto my next project... tank sensor re-wiring..
