My wife has been using her paper maps for planning trips since we married back in 1962 and we've had great luck doing that, but, I suggested she use one of the software packages available. We don't need campground information so much as streets and highways. I don't seem to find much using the search engine and would appreciate any suggestions from those of you that use software programs. She is interested in a program that gives travel distances and times. Thanks in advance.

Dave

PS: I don't need to be instructed to use the search feature unless you're going to give me step by step instructions and specific wording for searches.

We use the trailer life directory but last 2 winters I decided the areas we might be stopping at and do a bing search to and where that place is. this gives the miles and close to the time for the travel. This has worked great.

I use the Trailer Life Directory and it's companion the TL Campground Navigator CD on both desktop at home and laptop while on the road. Both computers have the software installed so CD only needed if we have to re-install.

Microsoft Streets and Trips. You do not have to use the GPS feature. Learn to navigate around using the keyboard, so much easier.

Have used Delorme Street Atlas for 16+ years. In addition to great routing by using vias to route the way YOU want to go, it will give you travel distances and times. We never go from Point A to Point B via interstates. We travel state highways and see the countryside. It's easy to print a route and directions, if you want. We use its GPS accessory to highlight the route and give turns, as we go.

We use two different ones. I use Microsoft Streets and Trips -- it's an easy one to maneuver around. My DH uses DeLorme's Topo --- that one is good for looking for altitudes of mountain passes and what kind of climb you'll have.

For a beginner I would recommend MS Streets and Trips. Has everything you'll need, it's cheap, and because it's a stand alone app it does not require an internet connection while on the road.

Thanks, once again you guys are great. I'll have her try the MS Streets & Maps tonight. She'll be at the beach today and it will give me time to download. She really loves those paper maps but with age comes a decline in eyesight and it's nice to have those little tiny numbers between the tick marks available and added up for you on the screen. It's nice to have the stand alone feature too, we feel with the RV lifestyle that, "Having Fun is Mandatory and Hook Ups are Optional".

I would suggest Microsoft Streets & Trips also. I would buy the current version with the GPS antenna. It allows you to plan a trip and follow on your laptop where you are. You can set the program to make a trail to show your actual trip route.
I would get the Trailer Life Directory and CD also. This gets you information on campgrounds as you go down the road. It can also be used with the Microsoft GPS antenna. Antenna is from Phraros.
