Friends and I were camping at Sandbar Flat in the Stanislaus national Forest. These small flying insects would get close in front of your eyeball and quickly move up and down constantly. ...hard to explain.
Do you know what they are?
I read a few years back about a bug in South America that would shoot eggs into your eye where they could hatch. I couldn't get that thought out of my mind.

My grandfather called them "Tassel flies". They bob around your face under the brim of your hat like tiny tassels. They are annoying, but do not bite. They look to be striped, light/dark like tiny bees.

They could be seeking out the moisture in the corner of your eyes. We have these nets that go over your head. Kinda like a pillowcase made of netting. Got them at a Cablela's type store. They're great for night fishing.

They also tend to collect under folage and patio awnings. Yes they are VERY annoying and not much other than a weather change will get rid of them. Some control can be found if there are a lot of birds (kill-deer) around but they are a mismatch even then. For the annoyance factor though, they don't even compare with the black flies. Some areas in Alaska they were so bad they would actually keep me away from some very nice attractions (well at least make me WISH I'd stayed away from them).

Thanks.
I looked up Tassel flies but didn't find anything. They do act like tassles though.
Heaven help you if they show up after you get a buzz going!

Found it.
They are eye gnats.

They must be new to California, as none of us had ever seen them. Tiny little shinny black bastards.
