We have the standard 6.x CF refrigerator in our MH and when we go on longer trips there is never enough space in the freezer or fridge. We already have 2 powered igloo coolers (igloo) that hold milk and other cold items.

We were thinking of buying a Dometic portable freezer (Portable fridge).

Has anyone every used one? Or know someone who has? I know they are really expensive ($900) but I could spend $1200+ on a new 9 cf fridge, or buy one of these..

Thoughts?

I'm thinking take along less and pick up what you need along the trip. We rarely fill the freezer much less the fridge and just shop where convenient during travels. Cheaper way out.

It depends if you are running out of freezer or fridge space.

Freezer space, I'd look at an additional Dometic model such as what is mentioned.

Fridge space, it might be cheaper to go with a heavily insulated cooler, load a few gel packs in the freezer, and swap those in the cooler. It is repetitive, but it is inexpensive.

Well, we tend to pre-cook a lot of meals and freeze them...so our freezer is often jammed on long trips...which can be 3 - 5 weeks long.

I was just wondering if anyone had tried the portable freezers. It looks like there are other brands besides Dometic that make them and they seem to get good reviews.

Thanks.

I do not have a Dometic, but I do have an Engel, Much like the Dometic (mostly cosmetic differneces, like my lid opens from the end instead of the side) and I am very pleased with it, Mine is 7 years old and the ice cream is frozen, The inside temp as measured is ZERO at the moment. I do need to clean it though as it warms a bit (say 10 degrees) if it gets too hot.

But after 7 years.. You'd need cleaning too.

It does cool a bit slower than a standard home type freezer but this power sucker only sips a mear 36 watts (3 amps at 12 volts) I don't even bother with the 120 volt cord (though I have a few lying about)

Very happy with it. Very very happy with it.

I have the larger 12volt/120volt Dometic ref/freezer unit. I am very happy with it. We use it as a freezer. You just program the temperature you want it to hold. I like to travel with full supplies. We have gone some places that was not to near stores. Thought we would only be there a few days and ended up a lot longer. It is great not having to worry about our food supplies

A small upright freezer can be used in place of an end table. You can get them for under $200.
