big issue with 5th wheel is that you will need a truck! size just depends on what size 5th wheel you want. that is the first major point.

Well, I'm going to stick my neck out here and say in my opinion; and my opinion only; it depends on how big you want to go. TT are great for the reasons stated above but, only if there smaller and shorter. If you start getting too long a 5th wheel is a better option. I would never change my 20 foot TT for a 20 foot 5th wheel. That would be dumb. But, if you start getting up to that, oh say, 26-30 foot range. You might be better off getting a 5th wheel. I know many here will disagree with this but, it's how I feel.

The TT we like is 36'9" so it is pretty long (Enterra 316RKS). I've been looking at loads of floorplans & photos online - there are so many to chose from!!

2 reasons TT are better for us.
1) I despise stairs, due to my medical conditions I have to be careful and I can get dizzy. Stairs are just an opportunity for me or a child to fall and get hurt.
2) we carry a golf cart with us in the bed of the truck, can't do that with a fifth wheel
A properly set up WD hitch with some kind of sway control will tow great behind a properly sized truck.
As far as wrestling the hitch. Well it may be true that the bars have to be dealt with, but think about weight of the fifth wheel hitch that has to be manhandled out of the bed of the truck if you need to use your truck for anything other than pulling the fiver.
Thanks!
TT: 1995 Layton 2910
Tow Vehicle: 1999 F-350, v10, 2wd, Crew Cab, Dually
Hitch: Draw-Tite Trunnion WD Hitch
Sway Control: Valley dual friction sway control
Brake Control: Tekonsha Voyager

I would NEVER tow a travel trailer that long all over the country. There are many versatile trailers in the 28 to 30 feet range. I agree 30 plus units are nice...until you have to tow them and find a big enough camp spot in a national park.

Is it difficult to find spots to accomodate that long of a TT?

Yes-and backing one in on a campground loop would be a real pain. Your tow vehicle is at least 23 feet-thats 59 feet total.

I have not had any problem getting my 32 footer in to any spot yet. You would be suprised. Even at the older sites here in Wa. Just take your time. I have a Long bed crew cab plus a 35 foot overall trailer. I have managed to get it into a couple of the Forest service sites out here, way down the dirt road in the Olympics.

We like to have a cap on the back of our truck and would not want to be taking it off and putting it back on after we used a 5W. So we will stick with a trailer.

One of the biggest pluses of a 5er to me, not always mentioned is that it is easier to hook, un-hook because I can look out the rear window and see the pin and hitch and it doesn't have to line up exactly. Also, no heavy, greasy hitch or weight distribution bars to remove and store. However, they do cost a bit more, are heavier, and you loose some space in the overhang. Also, less choice of size and weight.
