My medical condition precludes driving so the DW does it. She has pulled tent trailers, our TT, an Aliner, and our 5th wheel. Now she drives the MH. No reason why it should be any more difficult for a woman to drive these rigs than it is for a man. I suppose an especially petite woman might have a problem but so would a similarly sized man. For what it is worth, my mother, who turns 90 in December, still pops around the USA in a small Toyota MH. Of course, she has always been a bit of an eccentric. She spent most of the 80's as part of the crew floating around the Marshall Islands in a sailing catamaran delivering free medical/dental services to the natives.

I am not sure where you are located but it looks to possibly be NC based upon your talking about Kerr lake. If you are near Raleigh and interested, there is a Raleigh Camping group on meetup.com I am a member, it is a good group and a mix of all ages and people camping in everything from a tent on up through TT, 5ers and MH. I am a woman and I drive my TT everywhere. I taught DH how to drive it but he rarely does, in fact he hasn't since we bought the truck in my sig 6 months ago. I have towed it with and without him around. I can back it and hook it up and do everything I need to, all with a 5 yr old hanging around the campsite. I still love how I get looks from the men when I drive into a campground and back the TT right into a spot without a problem!

I can't think on anything unique to a woman. Sure based on your skills, interests and desires there are things that you could do to be prepared for a situation, but that applies to all of us.
Maybe a set of radios like we have so your son can help with the backing??? But above all else if you can't see him in the mirror your foot is on the brake. BTW These radios are great for finding my DW when she gets lost in the big box stores and yes we also have cells.

This is awesome! I fall into the category that DH tows our TT and I help set up and clean up. I do back up the TV while he directs me since according to him I don't give clear enough directions. I've asked him to show me how to back up with the trailer so I can practice. Would definitely like to learn - think it would come in handy so I could take it out on my own if need be or with my girlfriends

Everyone that goes regularly should know how to do all the jobs just in case someone falls and breaks a leg or twists an ankle or something. Backing is really pretty simple once you understand the premise that the trailer will go the opposite direction of the TV when you go backwards. In terms of giving clear directions.... walkie talkies are your best friend. That way you can say passenger side, drivers side and you can say tree on passenger side is 3 feet away or whatever. It works wonders!!!! We still do best with DH ground guiding w/ the walkie and me doing the backing up.

I drive a 27' Chieftan by myself. My only discomfort is times when I really could use a spotter - usually on the freeway. I've been at it for about a year now and I stay relatively close to home so far. This has a lot to do with my fear of the freeway. I have to work on that. Otherwise I love it. If I had a newer rig and cameras I'd be hitting Florida for the winter. Oh, and my job.

IN '06 I bought a pop-up camper for me and DS (then 9) to go camping in. We enjoyed it so much in Oct. '09 I bought a HTT and sold the Pup. We've been camping in the HTT ever since.
DS is now 15+ & can do all the set up by himself while I sit back with a beverage of choice. Next year he can do some of the driving too!!
And we have backing and hooking up down to such a science I can drop it right on the ball the first time, with his hand signals.

Since DH began losing his vision a number of years ago, I have been doing the driving. From a 19 foot hybrid to our 31ft class c which we use to tow our jeep, I haven't had a problem. In fact our MH is easier to handle than towing the hybrid!
I never quite understood the men who said they would never "let" their wife drive their MH, because she "couldn't handle it!".
As far as safety, keep a charged cellphone on your person and trust your gut instinct. If something makes you uneasy, get out! Politeness doesn't matter if you don't feel safe.
Happy camping!

Women drive city buses, shuttle buses, school buses, 18 wheelers, dump trucks, farm equipment etc. etc. Why in the world would it be unusual for them to be driving RVs of any size or type?
