I don't really understand "priming". when I hit the start button "start" on my older Onan gen (1996 or 7)the fuel pump kicks in and gas is flowing almost immediately. The carb bowl is so small, the pump would only have to run a few seconds until the venturi effect suctioned enough gas to start the gen., but I guess priming must sometimes be required or people wouldn't use it.

I knew about the priming function but when I finally read the manual I learned that I wasn't holding the prime function long enough the make a difference. Now I hold it about 15-20 seconds and it starts immediately with hardly any cranking.

I admit this is the first time I have heard of priming the gen. Some of you don't put your year/model of motorhome in your signature so I have no reference of when this was started on m/h...I have had three over the last 20 years and never heard of or used this feature. I just push the start rocker switch and it starts....I don't think "Hoppie" has this prime thingie....

On newer diesel onans this is not necessary unless you are changing the fuel filter. The start position also primes the system. Read your manual on when to use the prime position. It's not designed to be used everytime you start your genny.

Gasoline, propane, or diesel? I would be surprised if they were all the same.

Our rocker switch has a green light that comes on when you have held the switch down long enough. The service department actually told me about it when I was it for some warranty service.

I use it whenever I've gone a week or two without running the gennie, or when it's cold.
It cuts way down on cranking time on my gas genset. Push and hold stop until the green LED in the rocker switch stops flashing and goes solid green, then push up on the switch and it starts right up.

I have a propane generator and it takes 2-3 cranks to get it running. I'll have to try this procedure to see if it makes a difference.

Does this also work with the remote OFF/ON switch?
