hi everyone, i'm wondering how long it should usually take for the hot water heater to heat the water. We have an 86 motorhome, not sure how old the HWH is, but it's propane only. After 20 minutes, it was still cold, after an hour, there was about 30 seconds worth of warm water. This is surprising to us, we'll take what we can get and won't need the HWH much anyhow, but want to know if this is abnormal.

That is not normal.
With ours; I can take a quick shower after twenty minutes and with it left on while I am showering, there is enough hot water for my wife to get one right after and take a much longer one.
I am guessing that either your thermostat or the electronic board needs changing

Have you went out beside it and heard the roar of the burner running?
Or just the pilot light?
Are both the outside shower handles turned off?

Any reason to think you might have the heater in bypass?

My guess is that the water lines/valves are in bypass mode. Look for valves where the lines enter the water heater.

Both of our water heaters are fully heated in about 20 minutes time or less.

With our recent hot weather we haven't even needed the water heater. Normally 10-15 minutes will get it hot enough for a shower. The 98 deg. coming out of the faucet is nice for a shower. Drinking waters is something different.

thanks everyone, turns out it wasn't taking forever to heat up. I knew there was water in the tank, as i heard it going in, but must have closed the bypass afterwards - i had been trying different things not knowing what was what, and when I had it open (and thought it was right) nothing was coming out, tried it again more patiently and was successful.

About 20 minutes for a 6 gallon HWH.
