Yep, know it's expensive but we've been there before and love it...BUT I need help. Here's the problem-
We want to stay for a few weeks (up to month) in Fort Wilderness, but we know they have steep penalties if you make a reservation and have to change or cancel it. With elderly parents, weather, etc. plans can change. We'd like to play it by ear, but we have 2 small cockapoos, and FW has restrictions on which "loops" allow dogs.
So...has anyone (with a dog) ever called for reservations within just a few weeks of when you wanted to stay, or just showed up to see what they had...and had success? We have found the park surprisingly full (considering the price), so would like not to screw this up.
When you make a reservation you typically make a deposit of 1 night, and you have until 5 days before arrival to cancel for a full refund. However, I have heard that you can change your reservation within the 5 day period to another time frame without penalty.
You might want to pose the question over at FortFiends.net. There are a lot of Fort experts on that board.
We very rarely make reservations anywhere and just about always get a spot. I understand that a place like Ft.Wilderness would be a big gamble, but with your situation I would not make a reservation and take my chance. Seems like there is always someone else who cancels and opens up a site. An example was at St. Andrews State Park in Panama City, FL a few years ago, a friend wanted to come see us, looked on line and park was full, checked an hour later like I told him to, and there were 5 open sites.

Yep and less kids. No long lines. Face it Disney World is for us BIG kids. Had the best time of my life there. The Fort is the BEST camping. To bad we are so far away to make it an annual event.
