Is it better to get some Canadian money from my bank prior to going into New Brunswick from Maine or is it just as easy to stop at the border and exchange there?

For us it is neither, find an ATM after you cross the border and get what you want, exchange rate is handled and there is no exchange fee. BEEN THERE DONE THAT. Try and spend down any extra on the return trip with buying fuel, trinkets etc. and that way all you have left is change. JMHO

I ususally just go to an ATM in whatever country I find myself and get enough to last while I'm there.

Can't say about your bank, but it is easy to exchange US funds for Canadian at the boarder or any Canadian Bank.

I would not get more than $100 -$200 in Cnd cash. You can use a debt card for almost all purchases and most place will give you extra cash back if you ask for it. If you do that there is no extra fee added on. ATM's always add something on. You can use your credit card for everything else.
The less you plan the more options you have.

since you don't do atm's your best bet will be to either use currency exchange at border that do not give great rates, or enter local CDN chartered bank in the town nearest the border and ask to exchnage funds. You may be stuck if you enter on a Satruday/Sunday as many bank branches may not be open. my want to look online at bank web site for TD Canada Trust, CIBC, Scotiabank, BMO, Royal Bank and see who has a presence in the nearest border town and what the hours of operation are.

Whichever way you do it, do the exchange in Canada & not the US, you'll get much better rates. The US banks do much lower volumes of foreign exchange and therefore their rates are not as good.

We always get a few hundred at the border for newspapers and donuts and stuff. Use credit cards for everything else.

Almost all retailers will accept your American money at daily exchange rate. I can't say the same for the reverse situation.
Any Canadian bank will also exchange your funds.
