Was having some DC issues and when I checked my battery disconnect switch I was surprised to find the knob at an odd angle. Pretty sure this has not always been like this. The knob is not loose and turns fine, it just is very flaky as to when it actually makes contact. It almost seems like the "innards" of the switch have melted, corroded or something to push the knob askew like that. I guess this weekend I can take it apart and investigate.
Any thoughts? For reference the 3rd photo is the chassis disconnect switch which is fine and I am sure they both used to look like that...

Quite likely it has been distorted by HEAT. Could be from loose or dirty connection or could be from pitted points in the switch itself.
I would replace it ASAP. It would not take getting much hotter to start a fire.

Hi,
Tear it open for fun. Replace ASAP.
Is it a straight "on off" type?

not sure I understand the question, but the "good" switch does indeed have just two positions. This one, however, will rotate around and around.
I think you are right - this needs to be replaced ASAP. Just curious if there is an issue somewhere else that caused this or if it is just a defective switch.

What comes to mind is a defective contact on the switch causing the heat issues. Replacing it, and ensuring that it is well mounted should be the end of this problem.

When you open it inspect for any indication of poor connection such as corrosion, dirt, less than positive engagement of the contacts. Otherwise keep an eye on the new switch.

OK, found a replacement - Marinco 701HBRV House Battery Switch.
If I find anything interesting during autopsy I will post it back.

Hi,
Sometimes similar switches are used for battery selection--for example I have two battery banks. I could have a switch that had four positions. A, B, A+B and off. The same thing can be accomplished by having two simple "on/off" switches--which is what I chose to do.

Right, later after I posted I realized what you meant - the sailboats I used to charter had multi-position battery switches like that.
