we are wanting to go to the keys with the t/c & the boat for Christmas. we have had friends recommend big pine key but another friend said it was a dump. but we were also advised to stay about 40 miles north of key west & take the boat down because it was quicker. while there just dock the boat & rent scooters. I am looking for any & all advise.

We stayed at the Big Pine Keys Fishing Lodge for a couple of nights this past February and thought it was a very nice place. My only suggestion would be to make reservations very shortly. We just lucked out by getting a spot but I here it's pretty full all winter season.
Wish you the best,

To heck with Key West. I mean, go down for the day or a night or whatever if you have never been. We stay on Marathon at Knights Key RV. Boat ramp, docks, walk to bars and restaurants. Marathon has things like hardware stores, grocery stores, parking lots that don't cost $20 to park, etc.

If your goal is to visit Key West, the closest campground is Leo's Campground. http://www.leoscampground.com/ By no means is it a resort but if you want to drop your camper and explore / enjoy then head back for the evening then this would be right for you. The price is reasonable, the park is clean staff friendly and has full hookups.

I love this place. That Tiki bar is the bomb.
Only small issue is they don't have sewer hook up.

I forgot to mention, we'll be camping at Long Key State Park in December. http://www.floridastateparks.org/longkey/default.cfm The campgrounds are right on the ocean. They just reopened the campgrounds after making improvements so reservations are going quickly.
