I am in the process of sanitizing my potable water tank...the literature I read about it says to empty the hot water heater when draining the bleach water out. How do you do that? Is removing the anode rod sufficient to drain the hot water heater?

I don't have any check valves, so if I uncap a cold low point drain and open a hot water faucet the water heater will drain. It's the same as popping the safety valve but without the risk of having the valve leak afterwards.
I pull the anode rod and flush the tank at the end of the season.
