the only thing in writing i had when i left the RV was $80 for OC/service and $40 for genny OC. it was not stated that Oil and filter were not included. I had my mobile phone with me all day and did not recieve a phone call at any time.
I did not, as i previously stated, discuss with the RV center as i had failed to get all the information before the work was done and I feel i neglected to do my due dilegence and needed to pay the bill as completed. I was cordial as i was there as i was working to control my dissatisfaction with myself and the service center.
This for me was a case of buyer beware and felt violated at the overcharge.
after speaking wiht my typical service center they stated even with sythetic oil and airfilter they would have only charged around $120.
I do feel Mike's RV service overcharged and did not consult me when the bill went from the original estimate to the $250+ charge. For me it should have been a phone call to use $80 worth of synthetic oil and i hope the service center will be more forthcoming with future customers.
Again i paid my stupid tax, hope others continue to learn as i did.

I'm going to partly side with Mike's RV Center. First, I think it's great that they told their side. Second, I think people become sheep when they take the word of the OP as gospel and say they'll never use that business or product. I'm not calling the OP a liar, but I want to hear both sides (comes from 35 years as a cop).
The minute I read that the cost was $80.00 and $40.00, I realized that no one could make money doing oil changes on RV's at that price. A lot of the gassers take 6-7 quarts of oil and a large expensive filter. Plus, you always pay a little extra for a place that can handle a large RV. I think a reasonable person would assume that was labor only. Most of these services also include checking and filling other fluids and lubing the chassis as part of the cost.
Here is where I will disagree with Mike's RV Center. I think their assumption that the owner wanted synthetic oil was incorrect. If synthetic was just a dollar or so more per quart, not an issue, but there is a huge difference in cost. I would think the resolution here is for Mike's to refund the difference in the cost of the oil, unless there is evidence that the OP led them to believe he wanted synthetic.
"deshemar"......How about posting a copy of the work order.....that would be the evidence of what was agreed upon. I know I keep all of my work orders forever.

Now I'm a big believer in synthetics, but this is the first time I ever heard of a shop assuming someone wanted synthetics in a oil change! They usually offer, but not assume! And we all know what "assume" makes of us.
Yeah I agree fully with Don. Being in the auto repair industry, our estimates include labor, parts, and tax. This way, there are no surprises. In the event there is a change in price for ANY reason, a call is made. Until that contact has been made, we will not procede. The vehicles we work on do not belong to us, so making any decisions has to be done with customer approval.

Mr. Garland was given a written estimate for labor which stated that it did not include charges for oil and filters. Mr. Garland left quickly for Yosemite and we were unable to contact him by phone. Why would you believe anyone would want syn. oil on a gasser. You should have asked him before doing smoething so dumb. You are probably a reputable rv center but you blew it on this one.
I, too commend Mikes RV Repair for responding, but forgetting about whether or not a correct written estimate was provided, $260.00 for the service provided, even with synthetic oil, is just way over the top. Mike owes the OP.
Mike "owes the OP" is not for any one here to say. There were mistakes made and Mike may have violated CA law but at this point it is not up to us to intervene. This issue is between the OP and Mike. After 35+ years in the repair business in CA. I can say I ran my business by the book, all options explained, with no gray areas. If the OP did not question the repair at pick up shame on him and Mike made an assumption/decision that has now come back to bite him. No one performed correctly in this transaction and we should stay out of it.
There are plenty of businesses that I will no longer patronize but that is between me and the business. I see no need to go online and bad mouth any business that I may have had issues with. There are always 3 sides to every dispute; yours, mine and the truth.

carjon: why wouldn't he assume the owner wanted synthetic oil? i run syn in all my cars, and the rv too. for the extra cost for 6 quarts in mine, why not?

I call it like I see it YOU ROBBED THIS MAN!!! I have never paid that much for 3 oil changes in my PSD. I sorta doubt that he got synthetic oil. He trusted you but many more will not because of this post.
My heartburn with this is Mike's is REQUIRED by California Law to give him a written estimate. A quick call to the Bureau of Auto Repair, and the according to them the written estimate is to include the oil and filters, and must include all goods and services (Itemized), which Mike's did not supply. I know when I take my DP in for service I get a written estimate that includes everything, I don't even have to ask, and now I know why.
