Whaaaat???? I think they designed these trucks to tow in any kind of heat we have. If they did not then there woould be a lot of upset Texans as well as Arizonians. If it's not staying cool then you have a mechcanical problem

I am glad to hear that 230 degF isn't to bad pulling a steep 5 mile hill. Came right back down to 205-210 when I leveled off.

Those temps sound normal to me. I back off when the water temps hit ~225. If my autos wouldn't have gotten over 190, I wouldn't have switched to manuals. I'm due for a coolant change. I've kept it well maintained but I will do a chemical flush to be on the safe side and I already have RP purple ice to try out. Craig

190 on the trans is normal.
230 on the coolant is normal.

Those are both vary safe temps-

If you drive the same route again, try it with the a/c off and see how your temps compare (especially if ambient temperature is similar to your first trip).

For radiator add some Redline Water Wetter. Sure helped our last TV.

I use water wetter too in my 65 Chevy van 292 6 cyl tow vehicle and it does work. I also drained about a gallon of antifreeze out and replaced it with a gallon of distilled water. Pure water cools a lot better than antifreeze.

50/50 antifreeze/water mix will cool best.

If it stays cooler by draining some existing coolant and replacing with water, your % antifreeze was too high.

Actually, pure water will cool best. Problem is it will also boil sooner.

Turtle, I stand corrected.

Do you run water or water/antifreeze mix ?
