I have a 2009 Gulfstream Amerilite TT that my family really enjoys except for one thing, the constant drone of the A/C. I have looked around and do understand that this is a common complaint in campers, and sometimes it comes in handy in loud campgrounds. What I was wondering is if it is possible to install a thermostat so the A/C would cycle on and off as needed rather than always on? The A/C is the standard roof mounted Dometic Brisk-Air unit. If so is it something the average owner can install or should I have a dealer do it?

Thanks,
Chuck

P.S. As I write this we are camping and it is, as always, pouring :-)

It should not be too hard if you are handy .... you can download the installation instructions from the Domitic webpage and see what's involved.

INSTRUCTIONS

Read throught the manuals - it seems to me you should be able to set it up to cycle with the built in thermostat if it is installed properly.

The AC unit should already have a thermostat built in to it and it should be possible to control the AC unit with this...

If your asking if you add a wall thermostat, the answer is yes and has been done before by others on this forum... Do a search on that topic or wait a bit as I'm sure others will be along with those answers...

Question: Is the A/C currently controlled by the thermostat or does it have the control knobs on the A/C itself? If the A/C is controlled by the thermostate most that I have encountered allow you to set the one switch to A/C and the fan switch to "Auto" which lets the unit cycle on and off in its entirety. If you set the fan switch to"On" the A/C fan will run all of the time and just the compressor with cycle on and off. The A/C generally has a third switch that sets the fan speed on the A/C to either "Hi" or "Lo". YMMV.

Don't think I have ever seen an RV unit that did not have a thermostat control. Look closer at your control knobs I bet you will find you do have a thermostat control. Some are marked auto, etc.

First, thanks for all the replies. The a/c has the control knobs on the unit itself. There is a thermostat on it, what I meant was so the entire unit including the fan would cycle on and off. What it does now is control the compressor but the fan always runs. I have searched for this just have had no luck finding what I was looking for.

cathcartww - I will look at the link you provided, thanks for the help.

Because of the constant noise, we actually leave our fan on the A/C running all the time, at night. And then we just here the lesser noise of the compressor cycling to the thermostat.

I'd like mine to cycle off as well, but it's a double edged sword....I like it droning straight through the night. We woke up yesterday and found the grass was being mowed right outside our trailer and we never knew it! If we "fix" the A/C, then we'll complain about the grass cutters and late night chatters. Don't think I'll "fix" mine after all.

First of all is the A/C on the "ceiling" of your RV or "on top of the roof"?

Inside ceiling a/c, Some fan knobs don't have any type written words on it they just have a graduated black segmented line and where you set the knob on these lines dictates how oftet it comes on and shuts off. In essence a type of thermostat. My first TT that had the A/C in the ceiling was like that. The 'fan' knob acted as the thermostat for itself.

Let us know what you find out because the fan does have to shut off somehow! Picture of it, we need a picture of it!!!
