You said that this has happened on all three of you mh. Personnally that makes me think that it isn't just from getting old. I think that you are tensing up your muscles when you are driving and that is causing the pain. I know sometimes when I am driving I have to tell myself to relax. I then take a deep breath and let it out causing. This helps a lot. Good luck.

After traveling for a longer period of time, there's another part of my anatomy that aches.......to minimize aches and pains....

1. Limit your time in the driver's seat. We max our travel time to 3 hrs/day.
2. Take frequent breaks. Take pictures, walk the dog, use the bathroom etc.
3. Increase fluids...not staying hydrated is one of the biggest "issue" with many people. Use the "pinch" test...grab some skin on your arm, using your index finger and thumb. Pull it up and see if it returns taut on your arm. If it takes time to return to normal elasticity, you need more water...Dennis

Relax all death grips. NEVER do it.
Osteobiflex is a great drug too. Helps joints.


4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Adjust your seat to different setting every so often so your pressure points are different which stresses different parts of your body. This along with the other suggestion of which the best is more frequent stops. When we stop every two hours and walk the dogs I have so much more energy to drive longer and feel more relaxed at the end of the day. We also have been trying to cap our daily drives at 8 hours which means a lot as well.

Hi Dennis,

I see you on here frequently and enjoy reading your posts. I like the 3 hour/day driving suggestion. Since I just retired two months ago I still have not figured out how to use the time. Most of the time I don't even know what day of the week it is now.

I have always tried to limit our daily driving time to 5 hours/day. Last summer we went to Yellowstone park from SE Michigan and it took us a week to get there. I thought I was the only person to travel such short distances in a day. We are going to head out again the week after next. I'll let you know how that works for me.

I have always had upper back pain issues, so perhaps I should seriously consider further limiting my daily driving time. Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I have been happy to receive all of them, and I'm going to heed every one of them. If anyone has more to offer, I'll be happy to see them.

I had two repairs made to my cervical spine and after 6 hours my neck is on fire, really burns. I found that it's mostly from turning my head too much to look out the side mirrors, but not much I can do about it, I don't have side cameras.

I hadn't considered the mirrors until now. Our current motorhome, and the Dutch Star before it handle just the same. I can comfortably drive with one hand on the wheel and my left thumb hooked over the wheel just for for back-up. It doesn't wander, even when a semi passes. The Southwind even has nicer, more comfortable seats than the Dutch Star (gas) did, but the Southwind has the mirrors located on the sides. The Dutch Star had the mirrors mounted out front, so I didn't have to turn my head hardly at all while driving down the road.

Although I have always had these pain issues after trips, it seems to be worse this year. Perhaps it is agravated by the greater amount of head turning I have to do to see the side mounted mirrors.

If it occurs while your driving the RV, but not your cars, it's simply the stress of driving the RV. We all do it to a certain degree. If your having the issue everytime you drive, you're just unable to relax while driving.

I'm very comfortable driving my coach, but on occassion, you'll get into several miles of road construction where the lanes are narrow and you really have to pay attention and concentrate on steering the coach. In these situations, my neck and shoulders will tense up.

I'm guessing on trips where you're driving for several days, you don't have the issue as badly later on in the trip. It's because you're getting comfortable with driving after several days.
