My 2008 Winnebago Chalet/Sightseer came equipped with an Onan Marquis Gold 5500 generator. We are parked in the California high desert (el. 2200ft) with +100F daytime temps. I neglected to run my generator monthly as recommended and now it won't start. I replaced the airfilter, fuel filter, and sparkplugs I also sprayed carb cleaner in and on the carb. It still won't start. What should I try next? Part two of the question is does anyone have a source for service manuals for Onan gensets? Thanks!

Have you tried pushing the "Prime/Stop" button on the genertor itself? I is below the start button. You push and hold the prime button down and you should hear the fuel pump click. hold it for about 30 seconds or until you hear the clicking stop. This will prime the carburator and then push start and and let it crank for maybe 10 to 15 seconds and see if it starts. if it dosen't start, wait a few seconds and try priming again and then try to start.

X 2 on the priming.

Also how much fuel is in the MH tank. Many are set to not pull fule below a certain point like 1/4 or 1/8th tank.

Hello WheezerJeeper,

You did not share how long it has been since the generator was last operated. does the electric fuel pump come on when you "Prime"? If not, this may be your problem. The fuel in the line may have gone bad. As suggested by Mexbungalows, spritz/squirt a little gas into the generator carbuerator and see if it will briefly fire. If so, carefully disconnect fuel line at carbuerator and try to "Prime" the bad fuel out of the line between the tank and genny. Carefully reconnect the line, Prime, check for leaks, then try to start.

Unplug the remote cable and try starting from genset.
Try disconnecting oil level switch.
Try disconnecting low oil pressure switch.
Disconnect safety switches only for testing. (oil level and oil pressure)

How long has it been idle? I'm embarrassed to say... 6mos at least. Yes I primed the snot out of it before attempting to start. Yes I am attempting to start from the genset itself. The MH fuel tank is at 3/4. The oil level in the gen is between the full and add marks on the stick. I'm thinking that I need to clean the float and jets in the carb, that is why I'm looking for a service manual. I want to be sure that I disconnect everything correctly when removing the bowl. Just to be sure, the bowl drain is the screw just below the elevation adjust knob, isn't it? Thanks for all of your prompt replies. I sure appreciate your help! Oh, yeah, I checked for voltage at the sparkplug, good voltage.

wheezerjeeper nothing beats taking a bunch of close up digital images as you proceed. Have plastic bags that you can stick your dirty hands in to protect the camera. A good strong magnet to retain screws and springs. Reading glasses. Look especially for a disconnected broken corroded needle and seat to float pull down spring inside the carburetor. Some of those engines need to be fully closed choke plate to fire. Even dumping gas and starting fluid into the engine does not work.

I purchased a set of Onan manuals back in 1983. I remember them costing more then 300 dollars. I had to send away for them to Onan and they arrived via UPS.

Hope This Helps

Last time i checked you can not buy a carb rebuild kit for an onan genny, u have to buy a new carb. So if you take it off to try and clean it up be careful not to damage any of the needles or seats.

If you can find a can of ether you can give a tiny puff into the air cleaner. Sometimes the immediate firing will shake things loose. Taking the plug out and dropping a few drops of fuel into the hole and quickly tightening the plug it will fire up and accomplish the same thing.
