I have a droid smartphone and use pda net to tether to the laptop when there is no cg wifi. I eliminated my aircard. I have verizon serivce. OK, they have a new plan - so when I update my phone (I will hold off for as long as I can) - I will lose my unlimited data but gain unlimited minutes/text. So, with my very limited understanding of these things - I currently use the droid for reading/writing email, very little "surfing" - how will the new pricing plan effect my droid-pdanet use? If at all. I am a fulltimer, so internet connection is very important. thanks,

Don't give up your unlimited data plan, it's a bargain and you will be sorry if you let it go. If you decide to upgrade to a newer phone at a later time, pay the full price from Verizon or buy a used one. There are plenty of people like a relative of mine that love having the latest gizmos that hit the market and sell their perfectly working phones that are only 6 months to one year old.

You don't have to loose your unlimited plan at all. All you have to do is either buy a non subsidized new phone from Verizon, or buy a phone from eBay (or any other 3rd party). The phone will cost more ($100-$500) but once the new phone is activated you'll still have your unlimited plan. You have to decide if this makes sense for you in the long run.

Look on your Verizon bills -- every month it tells somewhere on there, your data usage. Then see how many gigs of data you consistently need per month, and look at Big Red's new tiered data plans. It gets 'spensive if you use very much. Go to droid.life.com, and search for Verizon plans, and you will find excellent explanations of the new tiered data plans.
I upgraded to a Galaxy Nexus last December, but when I upgrade again, I expect I will do as the other poster suggested, pay full price, or buy a near new phone to keep my unlimited data. I have bought smartphones a few months old in the past.
Keep in mind, it is kind of expected that eventually, Verizon won't allow us hangers on to continue our unlimited plans, though no one knows for sure.

We're in the same boat as you - having the unlimited Verizon plan and an aging phone. We talked to a sales guy at the Costco cell phone booth and he said that we could simply buy a phone, paying full price for it, and keep our plan.
If we buy the Verizon discounted priced phone with a new plan, then we loose the unlimited data plan and have to pay more monthly - forever.
Like the previous poster stated, buy a new phone or shop for a used phone on craigslist or ebay.

I'm not sure I understand your post, but your usage description doesn't sound like someone who needs unlimited data. We're talking movies and big files here on a regular basis. IMHO these unlimited plans are going away or going to get expensive.
I'd try to keep up with technology rather than keep a plan you may not need.

I have unlimited data with Verizon but my son has 4gb's. He uses the internet A LOT and never hits the 4gb limit.
And yes, you can keep unlimited if you buy your own phone vs getting one on their upgrade plan. I didn't find that out until after I already got mine.

Don't expect these "unlimited" plans to continue. Carriers are redefining what the word "unlimited" means and invariably it means you get metered data.

I had the unlimited data plan and gave it up for shared data. I tracked my data for a couple months and really wasn't using much. I use email frequently, use Facebook frequently and do google searches often. I wasn't even close to 1GB
The advantage for me switching to the shared data plan was that now I can afford for my wife and I plus two teenagers to have iPhones which was not something I could really afford before. I chose the 4GB plan, I'm on my first full billing cycle and have used 1/3 of my data halfway through the cycle.
I have email alerts set up to warn me if I run low on data allotment and you can call and upgrade your plan before you run out. This is a better deal than running out and continuing to use the data because that becomes outrageously expensive.
IF I didn't have two teenagers I would have kept my unlimited plan. In this case I'm happy though. Also, unlimited tethering, calls and text messages. (just my daughter alone had over 7,000 text messages last month... Don't ask, I don't know.)
I think the new plan is too expensive for just one or two people but that's just my opinion.
