I don't think it will affect you at all.
I have unlimited and started monitoring my usage a few months ago.
I was barely at 1G usage each month.
I started trying to use as much as I could and finally got just over the 2G mark by downloading some movies, playing radio and using it for GPS.
I am thinking about changing to the new share plan since I do not download movies regularly.
With my wife and I on the plan, we can get 4G shared for less than we are paying now.
We use 2 LG Cosmos Touch phones I turned on 75Mb plan on my phone only & saw I barely used 6Mb of what was allotted even playing with VZNav.
I intend to add a line in Sept. with a Razr Maxx (1 month early) from DW's eligibility. Verizon indicated it would be more reasonable to add a line & stay on our current plan than going to the Shared data plan. (We are not unlimited data!) The ~ difference was 70.00 for 1-2 months till I can drop DW's phone. Then it was still ~20.00/MO.
That is the plan, we will see if I can actually get that to work. Amazon is currently offering the RMaxx @ $99.00 with an added line.

Then see how many gigs of data you consistently need per month, and look at Big Red's new tiered data plans. It gets 'spensive if you use very much. Go to droid.life.com, and search for Verizon plans, and you will find excellent explanations of the new tiered data plans.
I upgraded to a Galaxy Nexus last December, but when I upgrade again, I expect I will do as the other poster suggested, pay full price, or buy a near new phone to keep my unlimited data. I have bought smartphones a few months old in the past.
Keep in mind, it is kind of expected that eventually, Verizon won't allow us hangers on to continue our unlimited plans, though no one knows for sure.
I have the unlimited data plan, but last year Verizon started sending me notices of data use (50%, 75%, 90%). Seems they have (put) a data limit with the WiFi hot spot (I think I have that right) with my Palm Pre. I ended up having a long conversation with a tech rep about this contradiction within the plan. Also had conversation with the wireless store people. Needless to say, color me disappointed.

You might want to check because you just might be able to get cheaper monthly rate then what you have now. The average person rarely hits 2G a month so unlimited is worthless to them as was our case. The only time you will need more is if you do Netflix or download lots of video and music. So when the wife needed a new phone we got her a smart phone too and a Jetpack MiFi device and only pay $20 more per month then before. They bundle your data now instead of each device having a charge and amount of data. We get 2G for all our devices and when we go on the road I up it to 4G just in case, but have never gone over 2 yet. You can suspend the monthly rate for the Jetpack which is $20 a month if you are not on the road.

your hotspot was a 2 gig limit addon for shared hotspot data
when Verizon intrduced their 2nd 4g LTE phone they had a limited time offer "share your unlimited data" $20 add on feature applicable only too accounts with 4g phones
i paid that up until June when i dropped it from plan
i can't get it back, and i do occasionally wonder if i should have keep it
i am now using FoxFi,
Be sure to run the numbers carefully before making any changes. We have two smartphones and three basic phones on an unlimited data family plan.
The smartphones never see more than 4 gb combined. Do we need unlimited data? No, however; if my son upgrades his iPhone at the "discounted" price, we will be forced to change to the new shared data plan. Going with the 4 gb plan will cost us 25.4 % more each month - essentially, we are getting less service for quite a bit more money. It would be cheaper in the long run for him to pay full price for the phone and hang onto the existing plan. Needless to say, I am rather disappointed in Verizon at the moment.
The new plan really does not offer much incentive - they jacked up the basic service cost - our three basic phones combined would go from $30.00 to $90.00 a month, while the smartphones will basically stay about the same, but with data capped. I'm fine with a shared, tiered data setup, but not one that is going to cost me that much more for nothing in return.

I double checked my plan recently with Verizon and asked that very question about them changing my plan. They told me I was good with the current plan until the year 2031 or something like that. They cannot legally change your contract until you change it for something else.
I was worried my 3GB MIFI plan would change since it is no longer available. I am good with my 3GB MIFI plan for $27 a month until the year 2031 I think they said... My MIFI unit allows me to use up five different devices that includes my M90 computer, my wifes HP computer and all of our tablets etcs and not be tied down to one cell phone with those capabilities. I setup my 60-foot MIFI HOTSPOT WIFI range anywhere we go and get Verizon service and then all of my computers that have WIFI capability works just like at home... Cant beat that with a stick. Its fast too. The MIFI runs for 4 hours on internal batteries and has 120VAC xfmr as well. I will slip the MIFI thing in my shirt pocket and the wife and I will drag our chairs to the beach and sit out and watch the ocean and MIFI away with our toys... Cant beat that with a stick either... I can peck out messages on a computer keyboard - no way will my 13-inch feet work on small smart phone screens.
On changing phones everytime my married kids change to something bigger and better or whatever I always get first rights on their older phone. All you do is call VERIZON and change the phone type with the proper ID codes VIN numbers or whatever it is and nothing else changes. This is how I got my woopie do smart phone meaning I have no idea how to use it - that is what smart means in its name. Before when the cellphone rang you would just raise the lid and yap away - Now you have to do several other things to even just answer the phone geeeesch...
