I have a Honda eu2000i. I found that it will run the AC on our TT with no problem at all at home. However, we will be camping in a few days at several thousand feet higher elevation.
My question is, first, is it OK to run premium in a Honda generator? And second, is there likely any slight power gain from the higher octane fuel?

Can't think of any reason higher octane would increase your power unless the engine is re-tuned for burning higher octane. They DO make a high altitude jet kit for the carburetor which might help get more power out of the 87 octane. What it the altitude of your campsite? several thousand feet higher than ???

Octane is a measure of resistance to detonation, it is not a measure of power/stored energy.

The manual that came with my Honda's said to use 87 octane. No need for higher octane because it will not increase the power.

I only run premium as all other gas around here has ethanol in it. The ethanol will run if you don't let it sit in the tank or carb for any length of time as it tends to gum up the works. I also believe there is a power loss with ethanol blends. In my truck I get worse mileage with fuel bought around here with ethanol as compared to pure fuel bought in western states.
As to a power increase from premium it actually is a little less power as premium is used to slow down combustion in a high compression engine so you don't get engine knock or ping. Good, real, regular 87 octane gives you the most "bang for the buck", but you can't get it around here.

Premium gas burns slower than 87. It will make less power in a engine timed for 87.

Don't they sell LOWER octane fuel in high altitude areas? I want to say I think regular is around 85 octane in places above 5000'??
Your Honda's problem is the lack of air... Just like any internal combustion engine that is not boosted has at high altitude..

Here in Southern AZ, the winter gas has 10% ethanol, but the summer gas has none of that in it. So I should be getting "real" regular gasoline this time of year. I don't recall offhand what octane the regular is in Northern AZ.
Alright, thanks so much, everyone, for your very prompt and informative responses. I will stick with regular gas for the Honda.
